“Overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Arrived at the hotel to be greeted by a man leaning over the reception desk with half his backside on show. The staff were gathered around discussing the rota and continued to do so whilst we were checking in. The place looked very tired and had a musty smell, definately needs some updating and deep cleaning. I think that £70/night was just too much for this quality of hotel despite the location. They also insisted on taking payment upon check in, which I thought was a bit cheeky!

“It's just a bit tired and lacking any real love”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

I have not stayed here so I cannot review the bedrooms but I have used it for a few business meetings now and I find the whole place just to be a bit disappointing. Everything about it is simply lacking.

The rooms used are scruffy with peeling paint and scuffs all over, the decor is random and a bit dated, the toilets are hilariously bad (marble effect melamine walls - truly ghastly) and the corridors and everything else are just thrown together.

Food in our meetings is distinctively Farmfoods / Iceland budget platter and is all the same colour (fried orange). The coffee was bitter and we were supplied 1 bottle of water for approximately 10 people over 6 hours.

Given its location on the Pantiles and the space they have this could be so much more. I guess it's a haven for unknowing tourists but I feel a bit ashamed for RTW if this is the welcome tourists get.

“A bit ropey, but has real character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

I've stayed at this hotel twice - both times I booked at the last minute and got the only available room, a tiny single on the top floor. Very basic, but clean and perfectly adequate. As other reviewers have said, the location is unbeatable. On my first stay the wi-fi worked, the second time it didn't, so I have to conclude that it's unreliable. Can't comment on the breakfast as haven't tried it - but there are plenty of great places to eat nearby. This is really an old-fashioned, traditional hotel, which may be overdue for repairs, but it's got bags of character to make up for that. And a great curry house accross the road. The concierge told me there used to be a tunnel leading down here from Mount Ephraim, so the gentry could nip down to the brothels and gambling dens without being seen.

“Needs updating but has character.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

Stayed here overnight recently and was fine for one night. Overlooking The Pantiles it was a very convenient place to stay after going to a gig nearby.
The hotel does need updating and is in a time warp, but is full of character.
Yes it is expensive, but for a hotel on The Pantiles this is what one would expect.
Breakfast is extra, which we didn't have as this pushes the cost up even more.
If the hotel was updated and renovated, this could be one of the classiest hotels in the area, but it would come at an even higher price!
Parking is situated across the road which is useful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking The Pantiles as the views are lovely. I would imagine rooms at the front...
