“Warm & Friendly - recommended”

Due to M25 motorway traffic delays we arrived later than we had stated. Margaret (the owner) stayed up until gone midnight to check us in. The garage parking was a real bonus as we had a boot full of goodies for our property in France. Breakfast was served in our room which saved getting presentable and meant we could relax before our ferry departed. Overall a welcome B&B and would recommened for that pre ferry stopover.

Thanks

Lauren

“If everywhere else in Dover is booked up, sleep in your car”

A very poor guest house. We were greated by the owners requesting an extra £2.00 to park our car after a 350 mile drive, we were then told that, by the owners, lastminute.com should not have reserved this 3 bedroom as it should have been more expensive, (i don't think so), very poor room, en-suite very poor standard, very, very poor breakfast.

Worth about £30.00 per room per night.

This reservation was made through an online agency that does not provide a means to pay for
or advise us you require secure garage parking, therefore payment for garage parking has to be made upon arrival as stated on our website. We are only advised of your name and type of room you reserved yourself online. We are not advised of your arrival time and have no means of contacting you should the need arise. Obviously from your harsh review, the payment of £2 (note we normally charge £3) after your trip down from Chester Dom was too much to bear and we are sorry this additional, normally welcome peace of mind expense spoiled your stay in Dover.

I hope to see you again in the future.

“Avoid, although it is inexpensive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

The tattoo parlor two door down from this establishment has a sign in the window that says "No pain - No gain". That could also be the motto of this bed and breakfast. It is inexpensive - for three people we paid 75 lbs. We did get a great breakfast each morning and we were in walking distance of the castle. That ends the positive. First, in a traditional bed and breakfast it is expected that the visitor could visit - maybe even use some public space. The only time you are actually in the house ( or even use the front door) is when you check in and check out. We were in the basement (below street level) which had a room configured with a small bathroom. You are instructed to enter and exist through the garden and a side alley. The room fit the three beds and one table and two chairs. That was it. There was no room even to put the suitcases in, much less to open them. Once we removed two chairs we could open the suit cases. You eat your breakfast in your room and the table in your room has the setting for your breakfast on it all day, which makes it difficult to use the table for anything else.

Sadly we are not able to control what businesses move into the area. We do have
Public "Spaces" available, a reading lounge, a PC and free Wifi and a walled Garden with seating - please see our website. All rooms have their own entrance, the room in questions utilises the garden entrance allowing guests to exit and enter as required. Security is a major concern, not only for your fellow guests but my family as well. Number One Guest House is a family house and as such we need to restrict who enters. Allowing Guests to enter through the main front door runs the risk to main door keys being lost, doors left open, strangers entering whilst guests are entering/leaving etc. We do not want to lock all our doors so the Garden entrances allow us to secure our private rooms whilst allowing free movement for our guests. It is a policy that has worked for over 35 years. Our home is not a Hotel, we do not have a receptionist/doorman or night porter. The vast majority of our guests welcome breakfast in the room and if you had requested we could have easily removed the breakfast cutlery. You only need to ask.

“Very convenient location for catching early morning ferry”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

Stayed for 1 night in September before catching an early morning ferry the next day. Pleasant room and it was great to be able to pay extra to have a garage space for our car overnight. Convenient location for catching the ferry.
