My wife and I stayed at St. Albans for 2 nights on the summer bank holiday weekend. The bed and breakfast is located directly across from the Dover Priory station, but if you have luggage you will have to carry it up a flight of stairs or around the bend of the street before you reach the hotel. There is also another flight of stairs up to the hotel and a fairly narrow interior staircase. The owner was there to meet us and was very helpful in getting us into our room and telling us about nearby attractions and restaurants in Dover. Unfortunately, there is an extra charge for breakfast - £3 for continental breakfast and £5 for a full English breakfast, and if you want breakfast you have to pay the total (room and meal) in cash. Still, for only £45 a night, one can hardly complain. The room itself (2 twin beds - the double wasn't available) is very small - approximately 10 ft x 10 ft, not including the bathroom. All rooms are en-suite, and the bathroom, while also small, was clean and in good order. The room was clean upon our arrival, and was cleaned daily. The beds themselves are quite comfortable. There was a wardrobe in the corner, but the door to the wardrobe was blocked by one of the beds (The double I saw being cleaned didn't seem to have this problem). The room was simply but nicely furnished, and all of the furnishings appeared to be new. In addition, room had a hot-water pot (with coffee and tea replenished daily), TV with built in DVD player, hairdryer, and clock-radio. These are very nice touches for such an inexpensive place. No phone in room, but there is a pay-phone downstairs. The double-glazing on the windows keeps the street noise to a minimum, but some of the interior walls are rather thin. In short, despite the small rooms, St. Albans provides comfortable lodging at a good value, and is conveniently located to the train station. Dover town centre is about a ten-minute walk, but the ferry terminals and the castle are at least a twenty-minute walk. However, there is a shuttle bus from the train station to the terminals, and taxis seem to be readily available in Dover.
