We stayed at the St. Alban's for two nights as our home base for the British Open and to be close to the ferry terminal for our subsequent trip to France. The train service in England is outstanding. We took the train from London to Dover Priory. St. Alban's is right across the street from the station; but there is a flight of steps from the train station to the street and then another steep flight of steps to the hotel door. We got in around 1 p.m. and went directly to the hotel, knowing that our room would probably not be ready, but we needed to drop our luggage. We rang the doorbell and to our dismay, nobody answered. We waited and waited and nobody was there. We finally went back across to the train station for a snack and later returned to the hotel to try again. This time, someone was there, but we had already wasted almost two hours of waiting. She informed us tha twe should have requested an early arrival and that it was posted on the website. Unfortunately, we had not seen that. Check-in time is at 4 p.m., so make sure this is noted! She then let us leave our luggage, but we had to go back at 4 p.m., so all we could really do is wander around the town, which is within walking distance. The room itself was pleasant, but it was the smallest we have ever stayed in and the bathroom was exceptionally tiny. If we were going to stay for more than two nights, it would have been a problem, but we were only going to be there to sleep. Breakfast was an extra charge and we opted not to have it due to the fact that we would be leaving prior to breakfast time. The Dover Priory station took us to Sandwich (Royal St. George's Golf Club) and it was quite a pleasant ride. Again, we were so impressed with British Rail. Upon leaving Dover, we needed to get to the ferry terminal for our trip to Paris, and it was quite convenient to take the bus from the train station that went directly to the ferry terminal. It leaves every fifteen minutes and it cost us two pounds. If we were to go to Dover again, I would try another hotel. Although we booked months before our trip, there weren't many vacancies due to the British Open, so we had to give St. Alban's a try.
