We were looking for somewhere to celebrate a special anniversary weekend and had looked all over Sussex and Kent without finding what we were really looking for. Eventually we hit upon Wallett's Court's website and liked what we saw there - fortunately they had vacancies for the Saturday and Sunday nights.
It was a real surprise to discover such a quiet and peaceful spot so close to the comings and goings of the port of Dover. Wallett's Court is reached down a side turning off the road to Deal (itself well worth a visit) which leads to the unspoilt village of St Margaret's at Cliffe. The main building is an ancient manor house, with additional rooms accommodated in various converted outbuildings set in neatly-kept pleasant grounds. We were in 'The Stables', just a short stroll from the main building and equally close to the building housing the hotel's spa and pool. Our room was a decent size, with a very comfortable bed, and pretty much all the facilities you would expect (the only minor quibble being a bit of a lack of drawer space). We certainly didn't detect any shortcomings in the standard of cleanliness either in the bedroom or (smallish) en suite bathroom.
We booked dinner at the hotel for the Sunday evening, and this was highly enjoyable, with well-presented, carefully cooked and really tasty dishes. It wasn't cheap, but there again we weren't (for once!) penny-pinching on this trip, given the circumstances. Breakfast was also very good, with a decent 'Full English' on offer, as well as kippers, or smoked haddock, for those with braver natures. Some might, I suppose, quibble at the cereal choice (all Dorset Cereals, i.e. good quality, but maybe a bit too 'worthy' for Rice Krispies lovers...)
The highlight for us was the chance to unwind and simply luxuriate in the spa, which we did prior to dinner on Saturday evening as well as spending pretty much all of Sunday afternoon there, after a session in the small nearby gym and a walk down to St Margarets Bay to 'earn' our dinner later in the day. We couldn't quite work out the complexities of the gym bikes and treadmill, but sort of managed in the end (though some instructions as to how to programme these machines wouldn't go amiss). Just to spend the afternoon, however, wandering between the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna was a real delight. We didn't want to leave! The spa area is quite small, but it was refreshingly free of any sense of 'posyness'. In fact, we had it virtually to ourselves for much of Sunday afternoon.
I also managed to fit in a highly skilled and totally relaxing hydrotherm massage by Ben Barnett (who really knows his stuff) and which is carried out in a little 'cabin in the woods' a short distance away. All in all, we couldn't have had a better day, topped off by a delicious dinner.
The very minor criticisms I could make centre around the 'little touches', like the not very good quality toilet paper and tissues provided; the fact that we had to wait some time before the spa robes were provided for our use; and the rather off-hand welcome received at reception when we first arrived. All things which could be put right with very little effort, I think.
If you feel like exploring the local area a little, take a walk down to St Margaret's Bay from the village (parking there is also free after the 30th September). It's a totally unexpected quiet little spot - well, at least in October it was certainly quiet, even though it was a gloriously sunny weekend. There's a pub, a little beach cafe, public toilets - and that's about it. You can watch the ferries plying to and fro in and out of Dover, mooch about on the shingly beach, and on a clear day the French coast is clearly visible.
We will certainly be returning to Wallett's Court - maybe we'll have to think up another reason for a special celebratory weekend...
Room Tip: Rooms in the outlying buildings are well separated from each other, so minimal noise disturbance
