“A nice place to stay but too noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

I think the hotel was good. The room was spacious and comfortable. There were 4 of us staying in a family room, 4 adults. The room was enough big for four adults. The ceiling is high so it feels big.
The only problem is the location. Our room faced a very busy street, if you sleep the window open then you can hear all the seagulls flying nearby and all the cars passing by. What is worse is the drunk people's fight in the middle of the night. They shout, fight, laugh and etc. Basically they do their best to ruin your sleep. The noise problem is the only serious problem at this place. If you keep your window shut and bring some ear plugs with you, there is no other problem.

“A gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2009

Arrived on a Saturday for one night before joining a cruise ship. Double room, single occupancy. My children recommended the place. The hotel door was locked when I arrived about 5pm but a sign directed me to the basement which housed a busy pub bar. A friendly local phoned the landlord who turned up eventually and checked me in. I was taken to a room on the first floor (no lift) and the landlord helped with my bags. The furnishings and shower were a bit dated but the room was clean and comfortable with a big bed, tea making and biscuits. The bar was welcoming and for early doors aperitifs I settled down with my Telegraph crossword and sampled some of its real ale (Everard’s Beacon, a porter called Dog-something, and a bitter brewed in Sussex would you believe), all excellent. The very pleasant landlady turned up for her evening shift; she also does the Telegraph crossword. Next door is a popular Italian restaurant but it was full at 7pm when I wanted to eat (book early), so as it was pouring down I opted for the neighbouring chip shop (very good). The landlord said I could bring my fish, chips and mushy peas back to the bar, which I did, and he then provided me with a clean plate, knife, fork, serviette, salt and vinegar. What service! The house red, which I think was a Chilean merlot was also excellent. Amazingly I slept like a log. They don’t serve breakfast on a Sunday morning but a short wander into town found a Witherspoons which served a full English for less than four quid! All-in-all a great start to my holiday. Would I stay there again? Definitely!

“Dirty , crummy & a bit of a let down!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2009

Well situated in town, close to ferry terminal. The facilities were there, kettle, tv, trouser press, clock radio ( broken), hole in the wall, boiler in room! Dusty, 10" cobweb hanging from ceiling, ancient smelly books beside bed, expected much much better from a claimed & displayed 4* accom.En- suite was nice maybe 10 years ago.Nowhere to check out at 7a.m . Main entrance door was filthy ,inside needed bringing up to date. Duvet Cover & curtains were same pattern but Cover had been washed so many times it was about 10 shades paler.

We are sorry you found the accommodation not up to scratch. We are aware of many shortcomings - some of them (such as the boiler in the room - actually it is in a cupboard, not in the room itself) are things we could only change at great expense, as they would need alterations to our Grade II listed building. Regarding the faded and out-of-date decor, our refurbishment programme has now started (30 Nov) and all rooms will be up to 21st-century standards by the spring of 2010.

“What a shame”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2009

We (husband and 2 friends) were so looking forward to our stay before our cruise but were very disappointed. Our biggest complaint was the lack of good housekeeping. The rooms were very, very dusty, like they had not been cleaned in weeks. We did have all the cleaning supplies outside our rooms blocking our entrance. Perhaps that was a hint for us to go to the job.

Loved the location and the Pub downstairs. We ate in the Italian restaurant a few doors down and it was superb.......Dino`s Ristorante Italiano (closed Mondays). What a fun evening, great food and service.

Dover was nice to walk around and Blake`s was close to everything, fresh outdoor markets, supermarket, Castle, shops, bakeries, small eateries.

The owners were friendly and accommodating.......oh those steps!!! hauling cruise luggage was a nightmare.

And, yes.........the seagulls are very loud, all night.

Would I recommend this B&B? Not sure, I would have to be sure they cleaned up the place!

“Great stop-over.”

We booked ourselves the Saturday morning ferry, so rather than an early start from the Midlands, we booked this place and gave it a go.

We were perhaps lucky to get an on-street parking space right outside the door. The welcome was warm and we were shown to our room which was perhaps larger than i had imagined, with a decent sized en-suite bathroom too. The only thing that stood out was that the hair drier did not work - well it did, but the vent was not connected to the pipe. I found it funny, but my girlfriend was not so impressed. Overall it was clean and tidy and just the job, being 5mins from either the Eastern or Western docks. I think we'd stay here again.

The one thing that did persuade us to book it was the CAMRA-rated pub in the cellar of the building. It was a busy place with some lovely beer, and I undertand there is also a good selection of malts....
