“Great weekend!”

My husband and I stayed at The Marquis at the weekend and we had a lovely stay. Upon arrival we checked into our room and went for a nice long walk and enjoyed the crisp sunshine. After returning to the hotel we had a snack in the bar and a few drinks & then went to our room which was lovely (we stayed in room Hopton). The room was nicely decorated and the shower was great, no bath in the room which would have been nice after being out in the cold but we didn't find it to be a problem. As part of our package we had the four course taster menu and the food was delicious. The staff were all very friendly and attentive and my husband enjoyed a glass of the recommended wine with his main meal, the sommelier also took the time to explain why the wine had been chosen for the dish which was very interesting. Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend!

“Perfect anniversary weekend.”

We stayed at the Marquis last year for one night but as this year was our 10th wedding anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to two nights and take advantage of the special offer on the hotel's website to have the Tasting Menu for half price! We had also treated ourselves to a suite and it was worth every penny!

The De Pamier suite was comfortable, warm and had everything we needed. The bed was huge and soooo comfortable, it was a struggle to leave it! The shower was amazing, although the ceiling is low in certain places due to the age of the building and my husband couldn't quite stand up straight under the massive shower head. I had no problems!

Having eaten in the restaurant during our last visit, we knew we were in for a treat for the Tasting Menu and we were not disappointed.

Before dinner, we had a cocktail in the bar. The Raspberry Royale could prove to be dangerous, as it was so delicious, you could quite easily forget it was alcoholic! We also chose the Sommelier selected wines to compliment the menu and that was possibly the best choice we could have made! The Sommelier really knows his stuff! One choice of drink did make us look at each other in slight disapproval as it was a local cider, which seemed an odd thing to have with rabbit, which goes to show why the Sommelier does that job and not us! It was such an amazing combination and the cider with the rabbit was inspired. With each course and each selected wine/champagne/cider, the food just seemed to get better and better and the grande finale of Banana Souffle with a home made toffee sauce had the pair of us fighting over the sauce to try and drink it from the jug!

The following morning, we awoke to discover snow and quite a bit of it ! The hotel is set back from the road, with a steep and sweeping entrance to the car park. However, nearly every member of staff was out in force, shovels and spades in hand (including the Head Chef). They cleared the entrance to the car park and made it accessible and safe. Before we left, they had even cleared the snow all around and off our car for us!

Every member of staff is friendly, helpful and knows exactly what they are serving you, whether it's food or drink. Most of the ingredients they use are locally sourced and all are presented beautifully but without being over the top. It's such a cosy, comfortable hotel that you really feel like you're "home".

“Spoilt Sunday...”

We stayed at the Marquis of Alkham on a late January Sunday evening. Our room was upgraded to The Granby which was beautifully decorated and had the most blissful squidgy bed. My OH said 'I won't be able to sleep on a bed that soft'! The following morning he was asking me to find out where the mattresses were from (I forgot to ask!)
We ate in the restaurant that evening: a well presented 4 course explosion the finale being a sublime apple souffle. Their wine list is extensive so it was great for us to choose a different port, wine then cider to accompany such a great dinner
Throughout our stay the service was superb: very polite, enthusiastic team!
If you are looking for a little getaway and want to explore the White Ciffs of Dover or South Kent, book the Marquis

Room Tip: front of the building overlooks a country lane which was a little busy!

“What a find.............”

We have just come back from this superb "Restaurant with Rooms". It far exceeded our expectations. The staff throughout were very attentive and knowledgable, the rooms (and we did sneak a sight of four of the rooms!) were all beautifully apportioned and extremely comfortably and luxurious. Our evening meal was innovative to say the least; each course reflected the chef's great individual style. What might have been a course of mundanity was turned into an entire delight for the tastebuds. We can honestly say that it would really be hard to find any fault with any aspect of our stay and I used to be in the hotel and catering business!

Room Tip: Should you be no problem at all in getting a good room from what we've seen.

“Nearly amazing”

We stayed at the Marquis recently for a romantic getaway, there were many great plus points to this hotel and resteraunt but a couple of negatives that really damage it.

On the plus side the rooms were fantastically decorated and so well equipped, a great shower, huge bath, electric blinds, great bed, massive tele, posh espresso maker, homemade biscuits.... and more. But some bright spark have removed the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom and put glass doors on the shower and toilet, you know, like they do in an etap. There was certainly room for a wall, and there may have once been a wall there, but it was absent when we were there. Maybe we are pruddish, maybe most couples love having their partner practically go to the loo in the same room - but with the sound turned up. Personally I think it is something that should be made clear when you book.

Food was of a very high standard, as good as I have eaten and the staff were incredible friendly and seemed to be able to talk enthusiastically about the origins of any ingredient on your plate. 3.5 hours for a 4 course meal was a tad slow though.
