“Central location, full of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

This is a really old hotel right in the centre of Canterbury. It's a fantastic location for seeing the sights and getting into the atmosphere of Canterbury. There's great shopping, restaurants, history, cafes…and the hotel is literally in the thick of it! The hotel is clean and full of character. Our room was beautiful, with a fantastic 4 poster and the bathroom was lovely. The jacuzzi worked really well (someone else reviewed that it didn't work) and we had a lot of fun! The breakfast was delicious. The owner was friendly and pleasant. We had a great weekend and I would stay there again. I think it was pretty pricey, but you are paying for the central location. The only down side, was that it was so central, that it was really noisy at night because you're surrounded by bars and people are literally walking right past your bedroom window. It was the summer so we needed the windows open. I would recommend ear plugs!!! I think this hotel is a good experience and good fun. Give it a try!

“Wonderful hotel in a magical setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Stayed in this hotel during September for a family wedding in Canterbury. I was stunned when I arrived at Canterbury city centre to find that the location of the hotel is pretty much as central as you can get without being inside the Cathedral! From outside, the building looks like something from a film set, it's quite remarkable!

Once inside, we were greeted by a very lovely French lady who asked us if we got there all right, showed us a few good places to park the car on a map and showed us to our room. Hot water was definitely working and beds weren't at all bad. Room was clean and fresh. Pleasantly surprised to see a television set along with Freeview and a DVD player (didn't get time to use it, but it's more than most small hotels give you).

I can't fault the hotel staff at all, the only downsides of the hotel are the lack of accessibility with a car (obviously this is nothing to do with the hotel management, it's Canterbury City Council's town planning) and also being woken up at 7.30am by the Cathedral bell-ringers (again not the fault of the hotel, it has period wooden frame windows, which can't be replaced as the hotel is probably a listed building and it would subtract from the feel of the hotel).

The breakfast was lovely, definitely served by somebody with an eye for detail. It was presented in very modern fashion, which contrasted quite nicely to the historic feel of the hotel.

The owner (I believe it was the owner) was always around and is very visible, even when we came back to the hotel after the wedding past midnight, he was on his laptop on the sofa, with a smile on his face as he greeted us back to the hotel.

I'd definitely like to go back to this hotel, but at £200 a night for a two bed/three person room in September, I can imagine peak summer prices being quite a bit more!!

“Dont waste your money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

We had initially intended on booking the abode at £150 a night but this was fully booked, when we saw this hotel on last minute.com for £175 a night we thought that it must be a very nice hotel as we are aware that the abode is lovely. Location is very central, however this is the only positive about this hotel. I would not pay more than £90 a night for a hotel like this. The reception area was not very nice and the staff are never there. The room was misdescribed and trust me the pictures shown are not similar at all. The room was tiny, bathroom not too bad. We were told that breakfast would be served from 8am and the staff turned up at 8.30 so we ended up going elsewhere for break fast. Beware complete rip off not justification for price stay at the abode!
