“you need to be fit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

The hotel staff were very nice, although the stairs to get to your rooms were something else, I had the top floor and the final few stairs had to be taken almost on your hands and knees. They would be no good for anyone with any health issues at all, To enter the hotel you needed to climb a flight of stairs then more to get to the different floors, no lifts to help. The floors slopped and if you dropped anything it would roll across the room. Once in the room, it was comfortable, had a TV, coffee making and a small sink. You needed to walk to the end of the landing to use a bathroom, and on one floor there was a step, not so good when sleepy and at night.

Room Tip: Do not choose to go for a single room they all seem to be on the top floor. Try to avoid even the fi...

“Perfect location but overpriced for the (lack of) quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

The hotel needs a total makeover. Whilst the location is perfect it is a disgrace in 2011 that hotels of this calibre can a. still exist and b. charge over £100 for the pleasure. The standard of hotel nowadays is high in the UK and Ireland, this one is like something from 1970......this place is owned by the Church who should really spend some money on it.
The carpet is dirty, bathrooms old and dirty....kitchen the same, smells......In fairness I think the cleaner does their best but its just run down...
The building is old but I've stayed in old buildings which have been done up to a high standard. I resented paying almost £110 per night!

“Makes Fawlty Towers look like the Ritz”

Firstly on line booking hadn't registered at their end though I'd had emailed confirmation so was eventually given another room with three beds not two as requested. Hotel appears to be run by undertrained disinterested foreign students who give you "I'm only here for two months when you have a complaint. Room dirty and poorly decorated, furniture falling apart, no duvets just thin blankets, bed on a slant, shower not working, TV broke and fused the electrics, phone not working so had to phone reception on mobile, got electrics on but TV kaput and told too late to sort out. So tried radio, old type which also had intercom, this didn't work and we were told none of them did they were left there for historical interest! Dirty glasses, dodgy lock I could go on and on. Frankly it was so bad it was laughable. We were offered free breakfasts in compensation but of course the twelve year old on reception didn't have authorisation to give a proper discount and no way to contact anyone who did. Masochists would have a ball here.

Room Tip: go to another hotel

“Pilgrimage”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

At the end of August I took two days out from a work trip to Britain to make a pilgrimage to one of the very few places I could find on the net that had real English animals like "Ratty" the water vole and Badger, ie the Wildwood just outside Canterbury. Of course Canterbury is a traditional place of pilgrimage and it seemed auspicious that in the Oxfam bookshop in Bloomsbury I found an old copy of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales just before going. I booked to stay at Cathedral Gate Hotel in the room called "Joy" with a quiet view of the cathedral as a splurge because it seemed a pity to go all that way and not have a good look at it. When I stepped into the room it seemed like one of the loveliest rooms I had ever been in. There was a good table and chairs, a sink, a dresser and a beautiful bedspread with little beads. The view of the cathedral was fantastic especially at night. The breakfast had really good fresh fruit and wholemeal bread and the coffee was good. There were only two problems, the bed was very saggy in the middle and there was a bath tub but no shower. I found it a bit hard to get up and down out of the bath as I am not very fit. I cannot comment on the other rooms but it was really worth booking this room for the pleasure of spending time there in spite of the bed. It is such a shame that in such a historic spot right next to the historic Cathedral Gate there should be a Starbucks instead of an English cafe.

Room Tip: Read the description of the rooms on the hotel web site when you are making a booking and choose wha...
