“lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Stayed for one night last week on their special Jan offer. The staff were attentive, helpful and enthusiastic.Room was a basic standard but extremely roomy, hate clutter in a room and this was spacious for the size, lovely toiletries and very clean. The plus side was it was in the High Street and you could walk straight out and into the shops. However the downside was parking, you are given a voucher for 24 hours for £5 which entitles you to a car park 10 mins walk away. This is fine if you have a small case but I did see a couple having to carry their heavy suitcase as it would not "ride" over the cobbles.
Lovely meal in the restaurant, my sea bass was fresh and delicious.
Breakfast was a full english and came piping hot with fresh coffee and toast. Although the hotel was full . nobody waited long to be served. On the whole a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter

“Saturday night away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I like the Abode's boutique feel and friendly staff. We booked a special deal for dinner bed & breakfast @£99.00 for the two of us. As someone who uses hotels a lot, this was a very nice break. We were upgraded to a small but plush room, with a basket of free goodies ( juices, water, chocolates crisps etc) How many times have you checked in to your room in the past and grabbed these only to find out that you were charged at check out? Not here. Dinner was at the Old Brewery Tavern which was very good with attentive staff. I have eaten at the hotel on other occasions which offers a more sophisticated dining experience, at a higher cost but you get what you pay for! I can recommend the taster menus.

Room Tip: Book early and try to get upgraded or take an offer

“Very overpriced, needs a lot of attention to details.”

I was attending a graduation and decided to take some family members along for the trip. I booked 4 rooms and had telephoned the day before to ensure the rooms were in the correct bed-configuration as I did not want my parents/ aunts to be inconvenienced on check-in. As it happens - on arrival it turned out that the beds had not been configured as requested- and it then took 3 hours for a housekeeper to arrive to sort it out. By which time my guests had no time to rest before dinner. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was less than average, portion sizes were all over the place for the same dish, not seasoned and the service was slow, sporadic and odd, to say the least.
My room was pretty run-down for a deluxe category, and in fact all our rooms were supposed to be deluxe, but we're inconsistent in size and decor. Broken lampshades, stained carpets, bath rooms with mildew and curtains that were UN-hinged?
The hotel seems to be run by local student-labor, and unfortunately as a result is uncoordinated and lacks finesse. For 160 pounds a night - very overpriced.
On departure my Aunts went to check out and were told all the bills had been settled. They asked to be sure, and we're told all was in order. 30 minutes later they were telephoned and told the breakfast had- in fact not been charged and could they return to the hotel to pay this charge. At this point we were already in Canturbury cathederal for the graduation ceremony. They are an elderley couple, and by leaving the Cathederal to return to the hotel they missed the graduation, as they were told they could not re-enter the cathederal. So they stood outside in the freezing cold - Thank you Abode.
The hotel was overall a big, overpriced dissapointment.

“Minor detail otherwise good.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed here on a recent visit to Canterbury.
Booked online a few weeks before.

Positives:
Girls on front desk fantastic - friendly, efficient, helpful.
Managed to accomodate me in the main Hotel car park as I requested beforehand. Good manner and keen to accommodate needs.

Room very spacious, upgraded to a desireable for a bit more. Clean, comfortable, good facilities (phone/wardrobe/tv/desk) and nice big bed.

Location slap bang in the middle of the city centre - walk out the front door and you're in the middle of town.

24 hour room service - great for late munchers...!

Downsides:
Decided to order breakfast at 9am and took well over an hour to arrive, had to chase up on the phone twice. Paid just shy of £14 for a room service delivered breakfast - definitely not worth it at all. Basic ingredients massively overpriced - sausage baguette, fruit, yoghurt and tea... Walk out the front door and there are cafes/bars with reasonable and much better standards of breakfast for less than half the price.

My room was VERY noisy all night - stayed in a room next to the lift and you can hear it constantly going up and down all night long, from the whirring of movement and the doors opening no matter that floor the lift was stopped at. I am usually quite acceptable to noise levels but the lift was so loud it was unpleasant.

In a nutshell?
Very sheek and tries to stand out as being a bit special but minor attention to detail in some areas needs improving IE soundproofing of rooms in noisy environments, breakfast standards/value.
For £120 it was a bit frustrating to be given a noisy room.
Expensive but worth it if you fancy a splurge...

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near lifts!

“Another good visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I probably stay at this hotel every few months for work and have experienced a great many of the rooms, some good, some not so great. Assuming you want to experience the Canterbury night-life, it has the best location of any other hotel - but it can be a little noisy late, especially at the back near to the local bar/clubs. The rooms can be very snug with furniture and seating near absent. Free wifi is good but can only have one device connected at a time.
The staff are very polite and willing to help, and the front bar is a great place to relax after a day at work. The food is also very good in the restaurant and for breakfast.

Room Tip: Don's stay around the back of the hotel
