“Lovely stay in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2012 NEW

We stayed at the St Michaels Manor hotel for 2 nights in early May as a last minute weekend getaway.

The grounds of the hotel are astounding and very pretty, what a view!

We stayed in one of the newer rooms which was nicely decorated and overlooked the street. The bed was a little firm but not a problem. The bathroom was bigger than my own room at home, and with a rainfall shower.

Breakfast was very nice and the waitresses went out of their way to help us out in the morning. A couple of mistakes were made on a very busy Saturday morning (there had been 2 weddings that weekend) but the staff were so apologetic and lovely to us that there was no harm done (and we weren't worried anyway). Good selection and made-to-order menu.

The hotel is very close to Hemel Hempstead so we took a trip out there to do some snowboarding at the same time.

Although the hotel was fully booked that weekend we felt part of the celebrations going on during our stay and there wasn't any noise from the disco downstairs or from other guests.

All in all, would definitely stay at this lovely hotel again!

Room Tip: Garden rooms look lovely as they overlook the view rather than the street

“Spoilt Our Lovely Day!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2012 NEW via mobile

It was a glorious Sunday about 5pm. We were with 2 good friends. The 4 of us are in out mid 60's. All smartly dressed. It was suggested that we call at the Hotel and sit on the lawn to enjoy a glass of champagne and finish our nice day off. The men went into the Hotel to order the drinks. There were 2 gentlemen sat near to us and about 4 people in the garden. The bar was EMPTY except for 4 staff. When the guys asked for the drinks they were asked by a women if they were part of "the function or resident". They replied "no" so we're told that they could not be served even though the place was empty and the staff standing there doing nothing. What sort of a jobs worth attitude was this. We weren't cluttering the place up. They weren't busy and our friends who wanted to see the Hotel in view of staying there will NOT be staying there! We gathered our selves together and slunk off to somewhere that was happy to sell us champagne. Thanks for nothing!

“Country elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2012

This is a lovely country hotel, not far from London, which made it a great stop for our last night - in town before returning (we drove) to the airport - better than those dreary airport hotels! The town is quite nice and there were a number of great dining options close by.

The staff was most courteous and to their credit, they did disclose that there was a wedding going on - AND they made sure to put us in a room far from the noise (which wasn't intrusive at all, given our distance from it).

That said, I'm not sure I would have stayed in hindsight knowing there was a wedding: on a couple of occasions, both my husband and I were shoved and jostled by wedding guests as we tried to make our way outside and it made it difficult to enjoy the surroundings that we had, in fact, paid (full price) for. So while a lovely location, be sure to ask first: is there a wedding taking place?

“Does not live up to expectations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2012

We stayed at this hotel for an anniversary break, we specifically requested a quiet suite so that we could enjoy a relaxing break.

The Hotel building and grounds are beautiful and the location is excellent. However that is where the positives ended for us.

The staff were surly, pompus and frankly rude at times. The Manager has a serious attitude problem when faced with a complaint and has no customer service skills.

We stayed in a suite - compared to other suites we have stayed in this was somewhat smaller than expected (although decorated nicely). The suite was suituated above a really noisy extractor which kept us awake all night coupled with the noise coming from the kitchens didn't make for a pleasant night. When paying such premium prices for, supposedly, premium rooms the very least you would expect is a quiet night.

The food served in the restaurant, whilst looking pretty, was a huge disappointment. I have never before had the misfortune of eating a tough piece of fillet steak - I'm not entirely sure how one makes fillet steak tough?! Stale cheese crackers, raw potatoes and serving staff circling like hawks waiting for you to drop something/need a top up so they can swoop in and fix it makes for a very uncomfortable eating experience.

Breakfast the following morning was even more of a dissappointment. A buffet style breakfast with chewy sausages, dry and hard scrambled eggs and cheap pastries.

To top our stay off they then charged us twice for our stay and we spent over a week trying to get them to refund the money.

Must try harder.

“Noisy Nights Sleep but otherwise very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2012

We stayed here after attending a wedding at the hotel for a friend.
The venue was lovely, the service very good, the food given during the meal was well presented and the quality very good.
Bar prices are expensive but then again what hotel isn't
The bedroom was lovely with a nice view of the garden, unfortunately for us we were in Lime which is under the extractor for the kitchen this produced a droning noise all night long and after a great experience during the wedding and evening this really did spoil a nights sleep.
The bed was comfortable and the rest of the features and fittings in the room were nicely done.
All in an enjoyable stay just a shame that we got very little sleep from the noise of the extractor.

Room Tip: Do not have Lime or the Adjoining room as they will suffer with noise from the Extractor
