The Old Vine is a pub/restaurant/hotel in right opposite the cathedral. It's only downside is the on street parking although resident's permits are available for each room.
Rooms are particularly large and filled with antique furniture.
I would stay here again anytime.

Rarely has a short break worked out so well. This lovely old hotel, set next to the 7th Century cathedral and beside high street shopping, gave us an old-fashioned welcome, a first class dinner and breakfast, and a comfortable room with well thought out touches - in fact I have rarely been in a room so well fitted out. Fresh milk in the fridge for the morning coffee and tea, as well as an excellent coffee maker are good examples of the high level of accommodation.

The management at The Old Vine obviously care about their guests and it shows. The location is perfect being directly across from the cathedral. The pub is very oldy worldy and has a nice feel to it. We had two rooms, the Nina campbell for the children and the Osbourne and Little for ourselves. Our room was superb, spotless, spacious and extremely elegantly furnished. The childrens room was lovely too. If I could nit pick I would say the bathroom is not quite as luxurious as the bedroom. Personally I dont like showers over baths and found it a little awkward.
Breakfast was excellent, locally sourced products freshly cooked.
I heartily recommend The Old Vine for anyone planning a visit to Winchester, it was great to stay somewhere with character rather than a run of the mill hotel
