“Cheap for a reason - it’s a dive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2010

Don’t trust the other reviews here - there’s no way this place merits 4 stars. Yes it’s cheap for the location, but it breaks the basic rule of hospitality - cleanliness. I can handle a little tat here and there but not layers of dust and grime. My brother complained the next morning and the proprietor promptly handed him a ‘consolation’. He knew only too well what a dive he was selling. On the plus side the location is dead handy, the place has character and with care and attention has the potential to be half decent. Shame the current owners cannot see this.

“V. Good staff and breakfast but a bit rough around edges!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

Had just one night here and was not too disappointed. Its a great location and friendly staff who try hard to make you welcome. The fact that it is above a pub is not an issue, and the menu in the bar looked excellent, backed by wide range of real ales. The bed was clean and comfortable and the breakfast very good indeed with a wide slection. On the downside, the Keats room we had was a little tired and grubby through wear and tear - i.e. peeling paint and stains on carpet, smell of food in bathroom as it's above pub kitchen. This said, I would not put other off, just don't expect 5* elegance! There is currently a viel of scaffolding and redecoration seems imminent so watch this space!

“Great stay, will be booking again!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

After a nightmare stay in a B&B last week while on business in Winchester I booked the Westgate Inn on the recommendation of my Winchester colleagues. I was not let down.

I had a very friendly welcome, the room I stayed in (Napolean) was very pleasant - decor was a little tired in small places, toilet seat slighty off the hinge, but this is being picky - I've noticed others have picked up on this, but I didn't think it brought down the overall ambience or quality of the hotel.
Bed was very comfortable, clean linen and towels, quality shower products - just what you should expect.

I also had dinner downstairs, I chose the soup which was homemade and I tell you - it was so good I burnt my tongue trying to get it into my mouth so fast!

My only problem with the hotel was the noise from the street - make sure you book a back room! On telling the owner this on my way out he has booked me a room for next week at the back of the building. Ideally, they should install secondary glazing on these front rooms.

Breakfast was very good quality - fresh juice, none of this concentrate rubbish, good toast, quality english breakfast. Given that I have to go back for a few weeks running I will be trying a selection of their breakfasts and dinners. The breakfast room was gorgeous too, on the first floor with doors open to a juliet balcony overlooking the street into the town.

I paid £75 which I thought was worth it for quality food, a good bed and friendly staff. Especially when you can go to a B&B for £50 and get the complete opposite!

Just one thing to note: they have a resident dog, absolutely lovely, quiet dog but just a thought for anyone who is allergic or doesn't like them...

“What a friendly and charming place to stay. Highly recommended.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2010

We stayed here based upon the recommendation of a desk clerk at a local roadside hotel that was sold out. What great advice!

The hotel has a great location, just across from the WestGate (hence the name!), and extremely reasonable. From the outside, you wouldn't realize it had 8 rooms, a restaurant, bar and breakfast room!

While it's certainly not modern, we thought it was absolutely charming. The room was large and clean. The staff (and even all the bar patrons) were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious.

I just spent two weeks touring Holland, the entire UK and Madrid. This was absolutely my favorite place!

“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2010

We stayed here on the 20th March for our wedding night with my extended family, we had 7 of the 8 rooms available. We had a great stay and all the rooms were clean and tidy [the shower was great & bed was lovely & comfortable], and all the staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us. For the position of the hotel within Winchester, I believe it was great value for money which included a lovely breakfast which was cooked for order. If I had to say anything bad it was the council office clock which started to chime at 7am, but other than that it was a great stay in a great little friendly local boozer!!!!!
