After a nightmare stay in a B&B last week while on business in Winchester I booked the Westgate Inn on the recommendation of my Winchester colleagues. I was not let down.
I had a very friendly welcome, the room I stayed in (Napolean) was very pleasant - decor was a little tired in small places, toilet seat slighty off the hinge, but this is being picky - I've noticed others have picked up on this, but I didn't think it brought down the overall ambience or quality of the hotel.
Bed was very comfortable, clean linen and towels, quality shower products - just what you should expect.
I also had dinner downstairs, I chose the soup which was homemade and I tell you - it was so good I burnt my tongue trying to get it into my mouth so fast!
My only problem with the hotel was the noise from the street - make sure you book a back room! On telling the owner this on my way out he has booked me a room for next week at the back of the building. Ideally, they should install secondary glazing on these front rooms.
Breakfast was very good quality - fresh juice, none of this concentrate rubbish, good toast, quality english breakfast. Given that I have to go back for a few weeks running I will be trying a selection of their breakfasts and dinners. The breakfast room was gorgeous too, on the first floor with doors open to a juliet balcony overlooking the street into the town.
I paid £75 which I thought was worth it for quality food, a good bed and friendly staff. Especially when you can go to a B&B for £50 and get the complete opposite!
Just one thing to note: they have a resident dog, absolutely lovely, quiet dog but just a thought for anyone who is allergic or doesn't like them...
