“Lovely stay, delicious breakfast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Came in mid-January, when Winchester was quiet and beautiful. The hosts at the Westgate were friendly, moved us to a nicer room than the one we'd booked (for no extra charge), which had bay windows overlooking historic parts of town, and exactly the sort thing we were looking for in terms of comfort, atmosphere, soft beds, and lots of character. Breakfast exceeded all expectations for food in the UK; the eggs Benedict and fresh-squeezed orange juice were fantastic. Good value, a lovely place to stay.

“Great English Inn, superb location, amazing breakfast!”

Stayed here for a long weekend just before Christmas, and booked a "superior" room with en-suite etc. The room (and the pub generally) was full of character, with decent antique furniture, and very clean with a decent bed and bathroom. The room was single-glazed, but the heating worked fine, and any traffic noise tails off at night. Very reasonably-priced too.

A lot of the reviews here seem to confuse the character of this old building with it being run-down or dirty - this is simply not the case. If you want spotless magnolia walls, identical rooms and boring "hotel standard" furniture, book into a Travelodge!

This is a great building with a long history in the heart of town, and makes a great base for exploring this ancient city. The landlord was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is AMAZING - a wide choice of dishes, and all quality locally-sourced ingredients - you won't find cheap supermarket sausages here!

Room Tip: Not all rooms are en-suite, so ensure you book one - and if you are concerned about traffic noise, a...

“Hospitality and comfort in this ancient city.”

A beautiful, crisp fall Saturday found us arriving from the nearby rail station to this landmark pub/hotel/inn just across from the ancient “west gate” to the city. The owner/inn keeper could not have been more hospitable and downright cordial. We lodged in the Napoleon room, large, clean and comfortable with “en suite” bath/shower and while the room faces the intersection of High Street, traffic sounds were well within tolerable range and didn’t interfere with a good night’s sleep.

This property might well stand a bit of cosmetic attention – however the Westgate Hotel deserves all the positive recognition of a quaint pub (including the hospitality factor), great breakfast menu included in the room price and quite convenient location for sightseeing within one of England’s oldest cities.

Note – there is a resident dog (well mannered, hospitable and not an ale drinker) but this could present a concern to those sensitive or allergic.

All in all, a lovely day (and night) in Winchester.

“Best place we stayed during our England Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

My wife and I took a 10-day tour through England; visiting Winchester, Salisbury, Bath, Oxford, and London. We both agreed that Westgate was our favorite hotel. We stayed in the General Sir John Moore room which has a direct view to downtown. If you look at the photo of the hotel, it is the room with the large french doors, directly above the entrace. The room has high ceilings, antique furniture, and great character.

The Hotel itself is within walking distance to downtown. Breakfast was amazing; the salmon pate is a must. The owner was very hospitable; after a long day of sight-seeing, my wife and I enjoyed a few drinks with him and some other locals at the pub.

In regards to previous reviews that have been posted; it is true that you can hear some traffic from this room, but don't consider that a deal-breaker. Also, the room, pub, and breakast area were very clean; I guess the owner took the previous posts to heart. Hope this is helpful.

“great location, great rates, great Staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed for one night after we had a recommendation from the tourist information and we were very impressed.
We had called a couple of other places and all of them seems expensive or fully booked so when I rang and the Westgate had a double room in the heart of winchester for £75 including breakfast we were very pleased!!
The pub is oldy worldy with the wonky stairs and big sash windows but it adds to the charm and our room (wren) was spotlessly clean with lovely big old furniture.
It was a bit noisy as this room is on the road side and you can hear the clock chiming but to be in the centre of Winchester you got to expect a little bit of noise.
The location is excellent thw west gate is in front of the hotel, the great hall and round table within 2 mins walk and the high street goes from the hotel straight down the road to the statue of Arthur.
We had a lovely stay and the breakfast in the morning was lovely, fresh and tasty.
I would stay here again in the future.
