My wife and I took a 10-day tour through England; visiting Winchester, Salisbury, Bath, Oxford, and London. We both agreed that Westgate was our favorite hotel. We stayed in the General Sir John Moore room which has a direct view to downtown. If you look at the photo of the hotel, it is the room with the large french doors, directly above the entrace. The room has high ceilings, antique furniture, and great character.
The Hotel itself is within walking distance to downtown. Breakfast was amazing; the salmon pate is a must. The owner was very hospitable; after a long day of sight-seeing, my wife and I enjoyed a few drinks with him and some other locals at the pub.
In regards to previous reviews that have been posted; it is true that you can hear some traffic from this room, but don't consider that a deal-breaker. Also, the room, pub, and breakast area were very clean; I guess the owner took the previous posts to heart. Hope this is helpful.
