“Hospitality and comfort in this ancient city.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

A beautiful, crisp fall Saturday found us arriving from the nearby rail station to this landmark pub/hotel/inn just across from the ancient “west gate” to the city. The owner/inn keeper could not have been more hospitable and downright cordial. We lodged in the Napoleon room, large, clean and comfortable with “en suite” bath/shower and while the room faces the intersection of High Street, traffic sounds were well within tolerable range and didn’t interfere with a good night’s sleep.

This property might well stand a bit of cosmetic attention – however the Westgate Hotel deserves all the positive recognition of a quaint pub (including the hospitality factor), great breakfast menu included in the room price and quite convenient location for sightseeing within one of England’s oldest cities.

Note – there is a resident dog (well mannered, hospitable and not an ale drinker) but this could present a concern to those sensitive or allergic.

All in all, a lovely day (and night) in Winchester.

“Best place we stayed during our England Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

My wife and I took a 10-day tour through England; visiting Winchester, Salisbury, Bath, Oxford, and London. We both agreed that Westgate was our favorite hotel. We stayed in the General Sir John Moore room which has a direct view to downtown. If you look at the photo of the hotel, it is the room with the large french doors, directly above the entrace. The room has high ceilings, antique furniture, and great character.

The Hotel itself is within walking distance to downtown. Breakfast was amazing; the salmon pate is a must. The owner was very hospitable; after a long day of sight-seeing, my wife and I enjoyed a few drinks with him and some other locals at the pub.

In regards to previous reviews that have been posted; it is true that you can hear some traffic from this room, but don't consider that a deal-breaker. Also, the room, pub, and breakast area were very clean; I guess the owner took the previous posts to heart. Hope this is helpful.

“great location, great rates, great Staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed for one night after we had a recommendation from the tourist information and we were very impressed.
We had called a couple of other places and all of them seems expensive or fully booked so when I rang and the Westgate had a double room in the heart of winchester for £75 including breakfast we were very pleased!!
The pub is oldy worldy with the wonky stairs and big sash windows but it adds to the charm and our room (wren) was spotlessly clean with lovely big old furniture.
It was a bit noisy as this room is on the road side and you can hear the clock chiming but to be in the centre of Winchester you got to expect a little bit of noise.
The location is excellent thw west gate is in front of the hotel, the great hall and round table within 2 mins walk and the high street goes from the hotel straight down the road to the statue of Arthur.
We had a lovely stay and the breakfast in the morning was lovely, fresh and tasty.
I would stay here again in the future.

“Fantastic Room. Great Location!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

We stayed in the Napoleon room. We could see the Westgate to Winchester out of our window. We really enjoyed our stay. The staff is friendly and helpful. the breakfast was always excellent. We stayed for 3 days. We never had any problems. Every morning we had a great breakfast and stepped outside the door to walk into the heart of the city of Winchester. Wonderful city. Fabulous time. We had a hard time finding St. Laurence Church, the "hidden Church". We got great directions from our host at the Westgate Hotel and found it and another church we missed, St. Swithun Upon Kinsgate. This hotel is a short walk from the train station.
