A beautiful, crisp fall Saturday found us arriving from the nearby rail station to this landmark pub/hotel/inn just across from the ancient “west gate” to the city. The owner/inn keeper could not have been more hospitable and downright cordial. We lodged in the Napoleon room, large, clean and comfortable with “en suite” bath/shower and while the room faces the intersection of High Street, traffic sounds were well within tolerable range and didn’t interfere with a good night’s sleep.
This property might well stand a bit of cosmetic attention – however the Westgate Hotel deserves all the positive recognition of a quaint pub (including the hospitality factor), great breakfast menu included in the room price and quite convenient location for sightseeing within one of England’s oldest cities.
Note – there is a resident dog (well mannered, hospitable and not an ale drinker) but this could present a concern to those sensitive or allergic.
All in all, a lovely day (and night) in Winchester.
