“Up-market B&B resting on its laurels”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

The welcome was warm, the room was comfortable and well equipped. However, if you offer a bar, it should not be locked and in darkness at 6.30pm with the only member of staff about to leave. The problem was resolved and we had a very good "house red" very fairly priced. Good breakfasts consist of good ingredients cooked with care: you do not need any great skill. Regrettably, our breakfast failed on both counts. The coffee and orange juice could charitably be classed as third rate and we have eaten better scrambled eggs on British Airways! This is a homely B&B, not an hotel.

“Perfect Weekend, In A Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

I stayed in the hotel with family and friends for a birthday weekend and ended up having a fantastic time in a great hotel with a lovely friendly staff.

The rooms are a high standard with lovely Molten Brown goodies included. The breakfast was good, with a good choice on the menu and was served with a smile!. The recommendation of the restaurant for monday night was a good one and I definitely will be back again!..

Room Tip: Room 4 was lovely, with a bath/shower, nice decor and pleasant views!..

“More of a B&B than a hotel but still very good”

No complaints really. Room was clean. Bed was a little narrow/uncomfortable. Friendly welcome. Good breakfast. Perhaps a little too expensive for what's on offer.
The city centre is a good 10/15 minute walk - probably too far for some.

“5+ stars, no matter what the others say.”

The Giffard House continues to be a 5-star adventure when it comes to a B&B. Situated just a few blocks from Winchester Cathedral, it is by far my favorite place to stay when it comes to Winchester and Southampton. And I've been traveling regularly to Winchester for more than a decade. My dilemma is whether or not tell others about it because I take the risk that more people will stay at the Giffard House and they won't have room for me. The Victorian home is decorated to an EXTREMELY high standard. The owner, Peter, went the extra mile in making this an incredible B&B. Leather couches. Fine art. Antiques galore. Proper curtains. The ultimate attention to detail. 15 books on the coffee table that discuss the history of Winchester. The well stocked private bar for an after-dinner drink. ULTRA-comfortable beds. Pillows that are PERFECT. Rooms carved out to maximize the use of the Victorian space without damaging the character. Hot water that isn't too hot that it will scald you, but there soon enough for anyone who realizes the distances that water has to travel in this mansion. Yvonne the manager is ALWAYS there to help. In fact, on this trip when I had a horrible cold, she provided me not one but two BOXES of cold medicine and offered to do ANYTHING to help me. Such warmness and care shows what a five star B&B is all about.

Room Tip: Book early, book often. Room #3 is so nice.

“Minor improvements needed to warrant 5*”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011 via mobile

Stayed in small suite on ground floor at rear. Looked lovely but minor irritations. Good bathroom but no shelf to put our things on and on our first morning hot water supply tepid (no problem 2nd day).
Couldn't fault the breakfast.
Some of the passing trains were very noisy in the wee small hours but all properties in central Winchester will be similarly affected ( but our room didnt have double glazing). Sleep also disturbed by telephone ringing in middle of night and a parrot first thing in morning!
Convenient for cathedral/shops/restaurants and great not to have to worry about parking.
The young lady who served breakfast was very attentive and friendly.
Surprised to return to room at 3.30pm to find it hadn't been serviced.
More expensive than similar places we've stayed in other tourist areas - but it seems Winchester more expensive area.
These are small points of criticism but when paying a premium feel there shouldn't be faults.
