Assuming that the staff read these reviews, can I please draw your attention to your extremely small portions, which everybody comments upon. Prices this high do merit a little more on the plate: the days of nouvelle cuisine are over. Next time we will go to the Chesil Rectory, where food is equally imaginative (arguably, more so) and prices the same ... and you come out properly stuffed. That said, the atmosphere of the Wykeham Arms is lovely, and the beer is fantastic ... which is the only thing we will have next time.
Actually, thinking about it, the food was ok, but there was something a bit wrong with every course. The duck egg on pea puree came on ordinary peas, no puree. Ditto the main course on sweetcorn puree (perhaps the puree machine was broken that day). The poached.roasted chicken was just a wee bit too soft in texture: good for teething babies or my mother with her dodgy false teeth. A little bit more bite would have been nice. Pud was an apple & plum crumble served in its own little iron casserole. Looked homey and inviting, but seemingly cooked with no sugar whatsoever. It was a bracing experience, to say the least, albeit healthy.
So, full marks for atmosphere and beer. We didn't stay in the hotel rooms. At the prices I've seen, we never will (even though we'll be coming down overnight to WInchester regularly for the next 5 years). There's a new Holiday Inn outside of town--a 5-minute drive. If you book the Luxury suite sufficiently ahead of time, you get it for £99. It's so big you can play cricket in it.
p.s Although the Whykeham Arms has a no children under 12 policy, we ignored that and had no problem. So good for them. Also delighted to see a dog in the room.
