“Another lovely stay here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

This was our second visit and will not be our last. Having stayed in a variety of hotels and B and B's of all star ratings, this one comes out very highly on our list of memorable trips for all the good reasons. The rooms are immaculate and well serviced with hospitality and toiletries. Our grumble is that the booking side of things was a tad sketchy and advise anyone staying to take your confirmation slips with any special requirements etc on it that was promised. However, once mistakes were acknowledged, they are remedied. The food is lovely and served in a warm environment. Looking forward to another trip or two in 2012.

Room Tip: We prefer the rooms on the opposite side to the pub but noise in general dies down after 11pm.

“Definitely number 1 place to stay in Winchester”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

We stayed for 1 night during the 2nd weekend of December mainly to see our son at the university and also to take advantage of the Christmas market.

Pub is a very traditional former coaching inn, full of period features but with all modern comforts. Our room was across the road in the annexe (Chapel View), was spotlessly clean, well equipped and very peaceful. The mini bar contained complimentary bottled water, beer and fresh milk. Bathroom was a good size with bath and shower attachment (no walk-in shower).

Staff were extremely efficient, friendly and helpful (especially Alex) despite being fully booked and very busy.

The pub is a couple of minutes walk from the cathedral and main shopping area and also has the benefit of a compact car park for residents only. The staff ask you to leave your car keys if blocking other cars, they can then shuffle cars around if needed!

We had dinner in the evening which was excellent, not cheap but not ordinary pub grub either. I would describe it as fine dining, very imaginative and beautifully presented.
Breakfast was a real highlight, the restaurant was very Christmassy with lovely decorations, fairy lights and carols playng on Classic FM. The food was every bit as good as dinner with quality ingredients in the cooked breakfast and the most wonderful rich natural yoghurt with fruit compote and home made pastries.

Can't wait to return!!

“Good location and excellent room.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Room - Large and well furnished (Canon). Big shower and clean. Quiet overnight so a good sleep.
Location - Really close to the Cathedral and therefore the town centre.
Staff - Helpfull, efficient and friendly.
Pub - log fires, loads of character.
Food - Breakfast consisted of quality items, if a little short on quantity. Did hope to eat in the evening but the menu was too bias towards fish items for us.
Parking - A real bonus to have centre parking. But as there is only space for about 9 cars you have to time your arrival right to get one.

“Worst Christmas Meal Ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

I went December 2011 for lunch and ordered the turkey.

It was one of the worst meals I have ever had and completely over priced at £17.00.

It comprised three wafer thin slices of turkey that looked like they'd been cut off a turkey roll; two potatoes the size of marbles; a few green beans; two indeterminate coloured splodges of goo (bread sauce?); gravy that I had requested be served separately but wasn't.

This was the first disappointing meal I've had at the Wykeham and it will certainly be the last for some time.

I was with friends I hadn't seen for some time and didn't want to spoil the mood, otherwise I would have complained at the time.

They were OK with their food but remarked that the portions were "stingy" - my meal would have been OK for a 5-year old.

“A unique and quirky place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We stayed at the Wykeham for a couple of nights. The location is perfect for every part of central Winchester - we were keen to spend time at the Christmas market and ice rink, and spend lots of time eating out. The room we were initially given had no working heating, the second room was great, but we were told we'd have to move AGAIN on the second night....a bit of a pain, but the staff could not have been more helpful and apologetic. We also got money knocked off the bill, which was great. The car park is a nightmare - constantly packed and it takes so much time to get everyone to move to let you out. Suggest you park in one of the town car parks if you're in a rush! Overall, the setting was great, the rooms were quirky and very clean, tidy and comfy and the staff were truly lovely. Breakfast was pretty damn goo too!!

Room Tip: Big variation in size and style of room - I would recommend Hamilton room.
