“What an awful place”

My stay at the hotel was not very pleasant to say the least. I stay in Southampton once a week and I have done for the last 2 years but unfortunately my normal B&B (The Mayfair, Landguard Road) was unavailable. I was on a course in Southampton and it was vital for me to have internet access. When I booked into the hotel I asked the gentleman (not the manager) if I would need a password for the wifi and he informed me that he didn't think so and if I had any problems to see the manager who had popped out for 30 mins. Whilst on the internet I lost the connection and to be honest it was a vital time I was in the process of emailing some very important work that was needed asap. I endeavoured to try and get a signal with no joy so I proceeded downstairs to find the manager. The reception was closed and I noticed that it closed at 9pm this was approx 915 pm. I came across a door which said PRIVATE on it so I assumed this must be the managers quarters. I knocked the door and got no response so I knocked again and still no joy, so I opened the door and did not place a foot over the threshold. I called HELLO and got no reply so I noticed directly to my right and in reach of my position without again crossing the threshold another door so I gentley tapped it and what a shock I got. The manager was on the phone and immediately pushed me whilst trying to close the main door shouting "GET OUT OF HERE THIS IS PRIVATE YOU CAN'T COME IN HERE". I was so taken aback but I exclaimed I only required an answer to a question and was told straight away that the internet had been switched off and then she changed her story to say that it was 24hrs and there must be a problem in the street as well as concluding that she was off duty and this was not her problem. I spoke to the manager the following morning and exclaimed that I was not in her quarters and she stated that it was PRIVATE that she was off duty and any problems I should have informed the owner who to my knowledge lives off the premises. I informed the manager that I would not be staying again and she said FINE. The breakfast in this place is awful the bacon looked like it had been run over by a truck and the chef did the cooking in a long sleeved fleece, very hygienic. The rooms and the whole hotel are in need of an update and the rooms are very dark and depressing.

Room Tip: Do yourself a favour and stay in a much nicer B&B.

If someone walked into your house through your front door, you would be entitled to call the police. This person ignored my privacy and walked straight into my lounge. Her review is not accurate as it is not possible to knock on the lounge door without entering the passage. I was shocked and annoyed about having my privacy violated. The internet is never switched off internally and any problems are from outside. It was obvious the bed and breakfast was closed for the night. We are not a hotel and do not have a 24 hour reception.
You only have to look at the other reviews to see this is a lovely place to stay , the breakfasts are good value and well cooked. This customer was rude and miserable and determined to make the worst of everything.

“Good Value for Money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

I booked two single rooms, one with a shower. The rooms were small but I wouldn’t have expected anything larger for the price I paid. They were however comfortable, very clean and in a good state of repair. The staff were excellent and the breakfast just right. I would definitely stay there again.

“Won't be back - they need to listen to customers reviews”

I stay in around 2-3 hotels a week because of my job also travel abroad in hotels 3 or 4 times a year. We are a mature couple and therefore will write a true and honest review.
Firstly I asked for a quiet room when booking and was given a room right above the front door. I booked a double room and got a family room with a extra bed in it making the room even smaller. The toilet & shower where behind a partition at the end of the bed with NO ceiling, this meant anything you do in the toilet could clearly be heard by the other person in the room!!!! When we arrived long black hairs were all over the floor in the bathroom, we are both blonde (where they the cleaners or the person that had the room before us)? either way, not very nice. I have to say the rest of the hotel was spotless.
Breakfast was lovely the one morning we did get it. BUT please note breakfast is between 8&9 weekends and 7&8 in the week, NOT GOOD for a holiday trip. If you take an hour to get ready in the mornings like me you would need to be up at 6.30 to be in time for breakfast., who wants this on holiday???
Many people have mentioned the toilets and breakfast times on the various reviews online - they need to listen to thier customers, we make thier business!!

Room Tip: small rooms with tiny partition bathrooms - not en-suites!

“Amazing value and spotlessly clean - could not fault it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

This hotel is amazing value for money. I needed to book at the last minute for one night and did this easily online. I was able to walk there from Southampton Central Station in 15 minutes. Very warm welcome, quiet area, rooms are spotless, with all the facilities I could possibly have expected (tv, tea/coffee in room, free wifi which works, hairdryer on request delivered to my room, comfortable beds, efficient breakfast service with a wide range of fresh food).

I am usually quite fussy and don't give praise to hotels often but am particularly impressed! Would stay again if I ever need to come to Southampton and will recommend to others without hesitation.
