“24 hour traffic noise from the A36”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

Ocknell is a 'natural' heathland site, so the only facilities are toilets. Given that those are supplied, I was horrified to find quite so much used loo roll in the brambles behind our tent pitch (and given it was a bank holiday weekend, there wasn't much uption to move. Do the wardens not check this kind of thing?

However, the worst aspect was easily the constant, incessant traffic roar from the A36. Although the directions to reaching Ocknell take you on a ten minute drive from the A36, its fairly circular, so you end up about 300 metres from it. There are so many better campsites in the New Forest.

“Superb Location”

We booked onto this site for one night on the way to Cornwall, we stayed for three and have returned five times since May. The location is superb, heathland on one side and forest on the other. We particularly liked the way we were allowed to choose our own pitch. The ponies, donkeys and cows roam the site freely and there are plenty of deer to see in the surrounding area, The few facilities the site has were certainly old but very clean. As for the price it was a lot cheaper than the sites we used in Cornwall.

Maybe we were on a different site to the previous reviewers, but we found the staff to be very friendly and extremely helpful. They do however enforce the the few rules they have, particularly those concerning noise and fires and we did witness one group being asked to leave the site for excessive noise, bad language and generally showing no regard for other campers.

One last comment and I cant stress this enough ROCK PEGS ARE A MUST!!!!!!!!!

“over priced”

Having just returned form a 2 night stay at Ocknell, we really feel dissapointed, nothing wrong with the site. The main wardens in charge of this site were so unfriendly and unhelpful. Also you could put up a large awning for free but you had to pay £5 a night for a gazzebo, only aloud one 4 pole windbreak. This poor family camped by the side of us put up two, firstly to keep their small children safe from the road and secondly to stop the forest ponnies from entering their tent (which they often do) they had to take one down, surely they could have used their discretion, they just seemed to like going arround dictating the rules. The prices for the forest sites have got way too expensive, considering that this site has no facilities and also charging an additional Friday and Saturday supplement of £1.50 per night. £36. for two adults for two nights is quite expensive, compared to sites with all the facilities and a swimming pool. !!!

I agree with the last review about ocknall stating if your old your have a brill time.
i went up in 2005 with a load of friends over a long weekend we wear all 19/20 years of age and was just looking for a good time (games and bbq and yes of cause drink was involved)
we had the stuck up nose looks and one of our nights 10:30 not yet 11pm witch is when ur ment to be quiet. we had someone bang a torce onto our tent (just missing my friend head!!!) telling us to shut the hell up!) now i agree i get annoyed when people take the mic and dont respect others but we wasnt even being loud and to have a torce banged on the side of the tent nearly hitting my frien, was uncalledd for. it put us all in a mood for the rest of the weekend. iv been going to the ocknall/longbeach sights since i was little and just coz im 20 doesn't mean im not aloud to injoy my holiday. so we are all going back this year 2007 may and this time we are going to have to hunt for a spot so we dont disturb anyone and my friend hopfully wont get an injury(haha) . wish us luck.

For my 20th birthday, I took 4 friends down to Ocknell campsite from London. We took Cricket and Football equipment, foor, a BBQ etc, and were looking forward to an enjoyable stay. When we arrived, we were greeted by an ageing man at reception. Before I had told him my name, he began threatening us with the procedure for ejecting trouble makers. "...dont matter what time of day or night; any trouble, and youre down that path whether you like it or not." He carrie don in this way for the next 5 minutes or so. This man had clearly made up his mind that we would be trouble. Far from being welcomed here for my birthday, we were frowned upon from the start. We decided to ignore his shallow views and ejoyed ablisteringly hot weekend in the tranquil surroundings of the spectacular English countryside. It seems as long as youre not young, youre welcome.
