Having nothing to compare it to, other than friends advice and online reviews, we have just come back from a weekend camping break at Ocknell. I loved camping, and Ocknell really will take you back to basics, there is only a toilet block and washing up facilities. No showers, and as we pitched in quite a way from them, a bucket was useful for emergency toilet moments. There is water taps dotted all over though, and waste disposal too.
The pitch areas were far enough apart and with blackberries bushes either side, we couldn't see our fellow campers, which made us feel like we had 'escaped' for a while. but everyone was so lovely, the kids rode their bikes around, made friends with other kids, and went walking and making 'dens' with other kids. Whilst the grown ups, relaxed in our little wooded haven drinking grape juice. Plenty of horses and donkeys walking free, and a short walk in the woods and we saw the deer.
Yes, you could hear the A road in the distance, especially the occasional high powered motorbike, but the surroundings far outwayed that for us, I didn't find it too intrusive, if you live in a city then you probaly wouldn't notice it too much anyway. The ground is rock solid (if you are prepared for this though it isn't too much of an issue - be prepared! :-)), we got the tent up eventually, and it stayed up. Ocknell is lovely for a few days, the lack of facilties probaly mean we wouldn't stay longer, but it was perfect for a weekend break. Apart from check-in we didn't really see the staff, but they were lovely on reception. A fellow campers daughter did injure herself coming off her bike, and her dad told us they were so helpful patching her up, and looking after her though.
Also, only five minute drive to Lord Walter Tyrell pub, which has lovely beer garden, food and outside play area for kids, well worth a visit., as well as Moors Valley Country Park.
