“Away from it all”

This is a really super Forestry Commission site. We came across it quite by chance last year when we were walking through the Forest and decided that we would try the site out. In fact, we stayed there on four occasions last year and for a three week block this year.

There are no shower blocks so you do need toilet facilities in the caravan - you cannot use the site if you haven't got your own chemical toilet. It would be difficult trying to clean up small children after a day on the beach or scrubbing around in the Forest without showers but as two sixty somethings we managed very well without our daily shower!

The pitches are all numbered and are like small alcoves in the trees. We have always booked a select pitch which gives us more room to spread out and more water points and disposal points. The staff at this pitch are fantastic. I believe they have been there for several years and really know the area. We had two of our grandchildren for a few days this year and one of the wardens got out the deer skins for them to see. They also gave them an antler for the children's 'show and tell' table at school and they were more than happy to answer questions.

The site is very quiet and peaceful and beautiful even when the weather is dull. You feel very much at one with nature - very relaxing and a step off the treadmill for a while. I do not know what the site is like during school holidays but it does seem to be more geared for adults than children. There are no playground facilities but there are other more family orientated sited run by the Forestry Commission - namely Holland's Wood.

All round this is a great site for a place to chill out. There are plenty of walking paths. Sway is about 40 minutes walk away with a good pub, The Hare and Hounds. The disused railway track (without tracks!) provides a good cycling path to Brockenhurst (superb butcher's shop there) plus good pubs. The Snakecatcher's Arms is well worth a visit since it was revamped along with the Forrester's Arms. Just go and chill out!

Room Tip: Premium sites are good, they have hook ups but go for a Select site if available. They have more sp...

“A Lovely Site in the Heart of the New Forest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2011

We have just returned from this tourning/camping site and it was lovely. A really great check-in experience, very friendly staff, loads of information. After checking in (we were well over an hour early and they apologised to us for keeping us waiting for 5 minutes!) you are given a map to either a standard (no electric), premium (electric) or select (electric, large pitch & picnic bench) area and basically you pick where you want to pitch. Everyone during our stay were really friendly. The pitches are large and there are waste and water facilities within good distance of most.
We really enjoyed our stay here. You see lots of animals and walks/cycle rides are in abundance.
I believe from one of our neighbours that up until last year, this site was pretty horrendous, however the forestry commission kicked loads of stagnant vans off and the place really is a nice place to be.

“Back to nature”

This was our first trip to a campsite and one that has no facilities apart from electric hook ups and the cabin where you book in. There are lots of leaflets on the local area in the cabin.
It was a real pleasure to wake up in the morning to see the squirrels climbing in the trees and the birds singing from the comfort of your bed. This is a lovely site in the middle of a forest
very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. The couple who booked us in were very helpful to us greenhorns and advised that an old disused railway track ran right through the middle of the site.
Next morning saw us on the bikes and the track took us into
the outskirts of Brockenhurst. Very easy riding for a couple of 60 plus year olds who hadn't ridden bikes for years. In the evening we cycled to the Hotel in Sway for a really lovely meal.
A completely relaxing few days away from all the stresses life has to offer and we would certainly visit this site again. Sorry we did not take any photos
