“Interesting hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Reviewed with the price and star rating in mind.

I enjoyed my stay here. Its a very interesting place - with lots of hints to former glories.
The layout is very different to the soulless chain hotels found all over theplace these days.

Staff were helpful.

The hotel needs work - lots of it. But its got real character.

Great location for City and Ferries.

“Very Good to Excellent Value For Money”

Stated only for pone night but found the staff friendly, the city interesting, the hotel very inexpensive,
It's location is reasonably close to rail and train stations. about 700metres. 15 to 20 mins. Downhill generally from stations. Journey very much like roller coaster ride with many changes from uphilll to downhill. Also it's very central for all local amenities. and shopping centres nearby. Close to a Witherspoons always good for tasty pub grub and cheap bevies.

“Christmas Party Night”

Very clean, wonderful staff, needed somewhere to stay as i live in Bournemouth and was attending my works Christmas Party, read some reviews before hand and was a little aprehensive but for someone who has stayed in rather a lot of hotels i think the price and the fact i got a single room it was excellent, some people have said it was a bit dated i'd prefer to say it has got character, much better than the plastic hotels of today.

Ideal location for shopping or bar and restaraunts, easy to get though in town it still had parking i would recommend this hotel as value for money.

“Very clean and friendly place to stay comfy beds big rooms”

My first thoughts of the hotel was that it was a very clean and presentable hotel they have very friendly staff and and excellent bar but I have to say I had a weird experience last night I felt the duvet was trapping me to the bed and a ghostly dog perched next to the bed barking what an experience the hotel is truly hunted I would defiantly stay again. What fun.

“Not so good.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Having stayed at the Star Hotel it was overated to say the least. The staff were great. But the building itself was somewhat delapitated. The window frame in our room was falling apart and had not seen a coat of paint in years. The view from here was a white brick wall with a roof littered with cigarette ends. Hot water to the shower took ages to come through and then only at a mere trickle. The lift was comical. As soon as you pressed the button it took of like a rocket! No warning or slight delay with this one. The bed was metal framed and the headboard part had two pieces of jagged metal sticking out where some of the frame work had snapped off. I caught my head on it a couple of times.I solved the problem by stuffing a pillow over it.The bed was comfortable apart from that. Breakfast was plentiful and the staff were great. However the breakfast plates were only a little bigger than a side plate.According to the price guide had I not booked this room online the cost would have been £90.No way was it worth that. £50 was about right I think with the cost of breakfast on top. I think it is relying too much on the fact that Queen Victoria stayed there and Charles the 2nd I believe. It seriously needs updating and spruced up to get over the feeling that it is a 1930's speakeasy!

Room Tip: If you want cheap and cheerful then you won't be dissapointed. If you want something more upmark...
