“Cant see what all the fuss is about”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Stayed at the hotel last week in room 205. Trip was booked by my employer and I was quite worried after reading these reviews. Just shows you need to take things as you find them. Yes it’s a bit outdated in parts but, and it’s a big but, what do you expect for your money? If you want the Devere Grand then pay their prices! My room was warm, clean, with plenty of hot water even on some very cold nights. The bar was pleasant, and the bar food nicely cooked and plentiful. Breakfast was buffet style but again it was warm and plentiful. All staff I came across were more than pleasant. Wood happily stay here again.

“Stay elsewhere”

I booked this hotel for my mother and I to stay the night before a cruise, it was in a good location for The Mayflower Theatre that we were visiting that night.
When we arrived we were told there was no food available as the chef was busy catering a private event, we were not able to order room service and were told we could go and find food places nearby, not a good start.
We were unable to get into our rooms as the keycards did not work, I had to make 2 trips back down to reception to get them activated properly. Eventually a maintenance man came to open the rooms and made us feel stupid for not being able to open the door.
The room was tatty and very cold.
I used the swimming pool and the whole area was filthy and in dire need of renovation.
Breakfast was poor with limited choice left under lamps.
I would not return to this hotel if you paid me.

Dear Madam
I do apologise for the shortcomings you encountered here at the hotel. The swipe keys can be a problem but please be assured that our maintenance man would not mean any offence it is just that he has limited command of the english language. The rooms are a little tired and like any home the heating is on a timer - we all have to watch the pennies ! I am not sure of your date of stay at the hotel but usually we only restrict timings on bar meals but not for the whole duration of service times - i apologise for the confusion. There are usually 6 items under the buffet lamps plus choice of cereals etc etc . The pool area does need some work on it and this is to be planned for later this year hopefully.
Thank you for your comments

“Here for no more than three hours, thankfully. A hideous pit of a hotel”

Some colleagues and I used this hotel for a meeting recently and had a terrible time. The room was freezing cold with impossible to control air con. The tea and coffee was cold. We only got hot water (to use with the various teabags they had supplied) after asking three times. A very bolshy man brought replacement drinks in (which were still not hot) and made a point of crashing each and every cup down on the table, which disturbed our meeting. This hotel is very old and in dire need of refurbishment. It has a feel of Fawlty Towers about it. The receptionist just about managed to (eventually) oblige our various simple requests but with no smile and no apologies. Awful. I would hate to stay here.

Dear Mr Jonty
I am most grateful for your feedback regarding the day meeting you attended. The receptionist you refer to has now left our employment as this is not our usual standard of hospitality. It transpires that the boiler used to produce tea/coffee was faulty and has been subsequently repaired. I do apologise for our short falls and your comments raised have been discussed with the persons involved.
Yours Sincerely
Peter Briggs

“Have stayed in better B & B's”

From the outside this looks like a very nice hotel but inside tells a very different story. Our bedroom was very small and depressing. The headboard, dressing table and bedside table were old and tatty. There were stains on the wallpaper. There was only one bath towel and one hand towel in the freezing cold bathroom. I had to get the other towels from the wardrobe which were wrapped up. The towel rail was at one end of the bathroom and the shower unit at the other end with nowhere to hang a towel. I had to leave it on the floor so it was to hand when I stepped out of the pathetic excuse for a shower. In the morning on our way to breakfast most of the rooms were wide open ready for cleaning. They were all equally as depressing as ours, most were even smaller with gaudy wallpaper and one bed which had been stripped of its bedding exposed a very grubby mattress. The self service breakfast was not very good and when we returned to our room two other guest plus ourselves were unable to get into our rooms using the card key. I was hoping the receptionist would enquire if we had enjoyed our stay when we checked out but she didn't, hence my rant on trip advisor.

I have read your review with interest and am sorry that the hotel bedrooms did not meet with your approval. Unfortunately the fabric of the hotel is outdated in areas and it is my intention in the new year to look at all the rooms and try to improve them within my budget. We have decorated and re tiled some rooms but it is a slow process. Thank you for your comments and it is by these comments are we able to focus on how the guest views my hotel.

“Would not use again”

As a regular traveller I have to say this is one of the worst hotels I've stayed in recently. From reception, bar to bedroom this place needs some serious money spent on it. Tatty varnished wood, dark reception looks as though it still sits in the 70's. My room was even worse. Carpet was filthy with numerous stains and marks. Everything looked tatty and 20 plus years old. To be fair the room wasn't a bad size but very drab in appearance and tv mounted at a 90 degree angle to the bed ... Bizarre !! Floorboards creaked and although half empty you could hear tv's and voices from other rooms. Ive noticed the manager has passed comments on previous reviews and I admire that but unless the owners invest I can only see this hotel going one way. Would not use again

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your comments and as you quite rightly comment it is the fabric of the building that needs capital expenditure. I will pass you comments to my head office.
Kind regards
