“Not for me either I'm afraid!”

Upon entering the hotel, I immediately noticed how outdated it was. Myself and my partner stayed here for one night as we had tickets for The Brook and it seemed the perfect location-5 minutes from the station. Unfortunately the lift was not working so we had to take the stairs, luckily we did not have too much luggage but I feel sorry for those with heavy cases! There was a sign up however to say an engineer had been called. Our room was on the 2nd floor (206) and we were suprised to be greeted by a strange smell and a blue bottle buzzing about which is not particularly hygienic and rather irritating. The bathroom was in a sorry state with large purple stains on the carpet and human hairs all over the shower. The floor was incredibly creaky and I felt as though I would fall through it at any moment. The TV was nice and the only modern item in the room. The bed sheets were nice and soft but unfortunately so was the bed, me and my other half spent most of the night rolling into eachother in the middle. We were also woken at 6am by the people above us moving around the loud creaky floor. I have to say that the reception staff were very friendly and we were impressed with the breakfast selection but sadly I will not be returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor so you don't have to listen to the creaky floor boards when peop...

Dear Ms Lindsay H
I appreciate your time in completing a review of my hotel. Unfortunately the lift is out of order at present and I have been informed today that the specialist parts are due to be fitted at the end of this week, but we do offer assistance if required.
Room 206 I have inspected and will admit the bathroom carpet floor is in a poor state of condition and i will be replacing it. My housekeeper has been informed of your comments re the shower and apologises on behalf of her staff. The mattress is on the soft side and the floor boards are creaky but unfortunately the building is over 60 yrs old.
Thank you for your comments and I am sorry you will not be returning to the hotel but please be assured that your comments have lead to some action being taken.
Yours Sincerely
Peter Briggs

Booked for one night well in advance. Following day was going on to QM2 for our cruise. Needed a good nights sleep. Was woken to the loudest disco we had ever heard. We thoght the DJ was at the bottom of our bed, We rang reception and got the Deputy Manager who told us there was a function on in the function room directly under our room. Did we not know there was a function going to be on when we booked he asked. How the heck could we know. What on earth made them put us up in a rom over the disco. It should have been reserved for guests at the function. We were told we would get a refund. On checking out we asked for the refund but was told the manager would be in touch. 2 weeks later and after I have sent an email and still no refund. The breakfast was excellent so will pay for that but they should refund the room charge at least. And yes the hotel is run down but we found it clean and that is more important to us

Room Tip: Not over the function room

Dear Sir,
I am now in receipt of your comments with reference to your stay here at the hotel. I am afraid I have never ,nor my front office, received your email you sent . I do apologise for the nights stay at the hotel being so disturbed by the function disco and as you quite rightly point out this room should have been for the function guests - which in 99% of these situations we do. Unfortunately on this occasion it was not the case and your subsequent disturbed night was the outcome. I would be most grateful if you woud contact me at the hotel so i can discuss this matter further with you our telephone number is 02380 343343 or email gm.southamptonpark@forestdale.com.
Thank you for your comments and look forward to hearing from you in the very near future

Oh dear - a hotel in a prime position but so in need of serious refurbishment - very disappointing. On our arrival we had to wait till the lone receptionist finished a personal phone call then spent some time fiddling with an outdated booking system. Into a dirty, tiny lift - then into a corridor that has seen better days - and into a bedroom in a similar state.

The bar/restaurant has not been decorated in some time with chipped dark brown varnish, odd unmatched chairs and tables in the style of a down market pub. The evening food however was surprisingly good.

It is always a problem that the hotel rating system counts mainly on the quantity of service rather than the quality. In the real world this hotel would probably be in the 2 star catagory.

Dear Sir

Your comments have been noted - yes the hotel is tired in areas but cleanliness, hospitality and quality of food , as you state, can make up for the fabrication of the building to some extent.

“Clean and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

Booked two rooms at short notice, but at a reasonable price, with breakfast included in the room price. Spacious rooms and bathrooms. Beds very comfortable and clean. Very clean bathroom. The furniture a bit old and carpet dated and with stains. It needs a bit of upgrading. Overall though, clean, spacious and comfortable. Positive points also: very good breakfast and swimming pool, spa and sauna available. Downside: too noisy. Perhaps with the windows closed, not so bad. We couldn't sleep practically all night, due to the noise. Not the hotels fault per se, but Southampton night life. Traffic fast and noisy through the night. Three times police cars drove blasting the sirens, probably in pursuit of criminals. Twice somebody was being sick underneath our window, at the back of the hotel. Very unpleasant sounds in the early hours of the morning.

Room Tip: Rooms to the side were quieter, according to our son, who slept in a room there.

“Unfair Criticism”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

Having read some of the "bad" reviews for this hotel I was a little worried about a 2 day visit I was about to make with my Disabled Husband. From the moment we arrived until we left on Friday we could not have wished to have had more help and attention from the Staff and my worries were unfounded. Spending time with Family and Friends the only meals we had were breakfast which was First Class and again the Staff did everything to make sure that my Husband was looked after. The room was excellent, very clean and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in for quite a while. I agree that the Hotel itself is a little "tired" and could do with a lick of paint in places but the Staff more than make up for this. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a "Premium"room...View over the Park with a balcony. Can be a little noi...
