For a birthday weekend in Portsmouth with friends, we booked three twin rooms at the Premier Inn for one night. Working out at just £31.50 each, it's as cheap as it gets to stay near in the area.
The hotel is brilliantly located close to the M27 motorway and has the benefit of a barrier-secured car park. Although Tescos and KFC are nearby, there is little chance of being disturbed here as the area is well away from housing estates or bars and nightclubs. Everything we saw was clean and in very good order.
A stag party had arrived earlier and there was a mix-up with the rooms. We were given a key to a room which, although already made up for guests, had someone's belongings in it. We had to return to reception but luckily got the room next door, the staff remaining helpful and friendly in handling the situation. One of the team came with us from the front desk to make up the second bed which was a nice touch - I think the true quality of a hotel is to recover quickly when something goes wrong.
Again, the room was pretty much in perfect condition, bar a little wear in the small bathroom and the TV had part of its panel missing - hardly worth mentioning given the quality of everything else. Free coffee and tea was available in the room too: it's surprising the number of hotels that no longer offer this.
We got up too late for breakfast, so chose to go to the Krispy Kreme shop instead. Located inside Tescos, barely a 60-second walk away, they sell tea and coffee for less than half the £7.99 all-you-can-eat breakfast - some visitors may prefer this if they don't have a big appetite.
Overall, there's lots to like about this Premier Inn and I'd happily recommend it.
Room Tip: No bad options here; the motorway is nearby but you can't really hear it - the windows are well...
