“Safe, secure and satisfactory choice in Portsmouth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

For a birthday weekend in Portsmouth with friends, we booked three twin rooms at the Premier Inn for one night. Working out at just £31.50 each, it's as cheap as it gets to stay near in the area.

The hotel is brilliantly located close to the M27 motorway and has the benefit of a barrier-secured car park. Although Tescos and KFC are nearby, there is little chance of being disturbed here as the area is well away from housing estates or bars and nightclubs. Everything we saw was clean and in very good order.

A stag party had arrived earlier and there was a mix-up with the rooms. We were given a key to a room which, although already made up for guests, had someone's belongings in it. We had to return to reception but luckily got the room next door, the staff remaining helpful and friendly in handling the situation. One of the team came with us from the front desk to make up the second bed which was a nice touch - I think the true quality of a hotel is to recover quickly when something goes wrong.

Again, the room was pretty much in perfect condition, bar a little wear in the small bathroom and the TV had part of its panel missing - hardly worth mentioning given the quality of everything else. Free coffee and tea was available in the room too: it's surprising the number of hotels that no longer offer this.

We got up too late for breakfast, so chose to go to the Krispy Kreme shop instead. Located inside Tescos, barely a 60-second walk away, they sell tea and coffee for less than half the £7.99 all-you-can-eat breakfast - some visitors may prefer this if they don't have a big appetite.

Overall, there's lots to like about this Premier Inn and I'd happily recommend it.

Room Tip: No bad options here; the motorway is nearby but you can't really hear it - the windows are well...

Lovely hotel with ample parking... Room very clean and for me 'cool' just the right temperature. Helpful, happy and welcoming staff. Big comfortable bed. No outside noise to disturb and I slept like a log, which is not often the case for me when staying in a hotel.

Room Tip: Recommend the rear of the hotel...

“Clean and comfortable”

I chose to stay at this hotel as it was the closest to where I needed to be for a job interview. I was unaware that dinner was only being served until 9:30pm so this is the only thing that upset me about this hotel as other places that I have been to will serve dinner until much later. However, there is a Tesco and KFC nearby with a Beefeater and Pizza Hut next to the hotel as well. As I am not a big fan of KFC, I was quite upset about the fact that I had to walk in the cold to get some dinner that was not even worth my money. The room was clean and tidy, as well as the bathroom, and the bed was very warm and comfortable. As this was my first stay with this hotel chain, I was very impressed by the service offered and the quality offered. Check-in was incredibly fast and I go to my room within 5 minutes. I only felt a bit robbed because I was not able to enjoy any dinner. Other than that, if you get there on time you are in luck. I would definitely recommend as this is a cosy hotel and quite affordable.

“Great place for a stop over”

My wife and I stayed here overnight (we have stayed several times before) prior to catching the ferry to the Channel Islands. As we had stayed before we knew what to expect. Having pre -booked (we paid £29 for the room), check in was effortless and we were soon into our room. Like all Premier Inns, the rooms are fairly basic but comfortable with TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Unlike most Premier Inns (I believe this used to be a Tulip Hotel) there is only a toilet/shower room with the wash basin being in the bedroom. The walk in shower, with seat, is very good and like the bedroom was spotlessly clean. Drink prices are reasonable and the "all you can eat breakfast" at £7.95 was good value. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food is reasonably priced and of good quality from a fairly varied menu. There is a Beefeater across the road attached to an adjacent Premier Inn and there is a Pizza Hut, KFC and Tesco express nearby, all within walking distance. If you are catching an early ferry out of Portsmouth or arriving on a late ferry back this is an ideal place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is not facing the main road

“If it aint broke don't fix it”

We often use Premier Inns for short stays as they usually provide what we are looking for at a sensible price. Unfortunately the management seems to want to "tinker" with their product, hence my review title. The room we had was spacious and light and we had no problems with road noise although once you stepped outside the building there was no doubting that a motorway was just a short distance away. The staff were friendly and helpful which we usually find with Premier Inn staff. Having got off to a good start we find the strange "washbasin in the bedroom" set-up - what's that about?? Leave it in the bathroom with the lovely big shower and the loo. Also, who is putting masses of chlorine in the water? The towels smell as if you've been swimming in the local pool, we don't want our tapwater with added chemicals thank you. Finally I've got to take issue with the hotel name/description. It is not at Port Solent, it's on the North Harbour trading estate. Port Solent is on the other side of the M27 and really only accessible by car - bearing in mind the leisure opportunities at the marina would it have hurt to put in a pedestrian link at the time of motorway construction and so save short car journeys?
The niggles would not put us off going back again but it is such a shame when it is clear that a little thought at the planning stage could have made this something far, far better. I still give them a "very good" as their staff always seem friendly and helpful wherever we've been.

Room Tip: Apparently rooms on upper floors with even numbers are best for avoiding any traffic noise (worked f...
