“Great place for a stop over”

My wife and I stayed here overnight (we have stayed several times before) prior to catching the ferry to the Channel Islands. As we had stayed before we knew what to expect. Having pre -booked (we paid £29 for the room), check in was effortless and we were soon into our room. Like all Premier Inns, the rooms are fairly basic but comfortable with TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Unlike most Premier Inns (I believe this used to be a Tulip Hotel) there is only a toilet/shower room with the wash basin being in the bedroom. The walk in shower, with seat, is very good and like the bedroom was spotlessly clean. Drink prices are reasonable and the "all you can eat breakfast" at £7.95 was good value. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food is reasonably priced and of good quality from a fairly varied menu. There is a Beefeater across the road attached to an adjacent Premier Inn and there is a Pizza Hut, KFC and Tesco express nearby, all within walking distance. If you are catching an early ferry out of Portsmouth or arriving on a late ferry back this is an ideal place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is not facing the main road

“If it aint broke don't fix it”

We often use Premier Inns for short stays as they usually provide what we are looking for at a sensible price. Unfortunately the management seems to want to "tinker" with their product, hence my review title. The room we had was spacious and light and we had no problems with road noise although once you stepped outside the building there was no doubting that a motorway was just a short distance away. The staff were friendly and helpful which we usually find with Premier Inn staff. Having got off to a good start we find the strange "washbasin in the bedroom" set-up - what's that about?? Leave it in the bathroom with the lovely big shower and the loo. Also, who is putting masses of chlorine in the water? The towels smell as if you've been swimming in the local pool, we don't want our tapwater with added chemicals thank you. Finally I've got to take issue with the hotel name/description. It is not at Port Solent, it's on the North Harbour trading estate. Port Solent is on the other side of the M27 and really only accessible by car - bearing in mind the leisure opportunities at the marina would it have hurt to put in a pedestrian link at the time of motorway construction and so save short car journeys?
The niggles would not put us off going back again but it is such a shame when it is clear that a little thought at the planning stage could have made this something far, far better. I still give them a "very good" as their staff always seem friendly and helpful wherever we've been.

Room Tip: Apparently rooms on upper floors with even numbers are best for avoiding any traffic noise (worked f...

“Great break.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

I was down in portsmouth for the football recently & stayed at this hotel again. there's nothing special about this premier inn but everything they offer is of the finest quality.

Room are basic but very clean, the drinks tray is always restocked and clean towels everyday.

“Ready tor early ferry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

This hotel was clean, quiet, and near enough to the ferry port to make an ideal stopover before the early ferry (or indeed, after a late ferry back). Shame we were too early leaving to get a breakfast! Didn't sleep well, but only because I was nervous about the trip! Will certainly always use this hotel in future.

Room Tip: Ours overlooked the carpark which meant I could keep an eye on my vehicle easily!

“Nice and clean but noisy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We had a family room, fairly new I thought and very clean but the A road made it a misery for us as was noisy with every car/motorbike pulling off at the traffic lights waking us.

Would be good as a stopover as we were travelling to IOWight and easy access to Portsmouth town and the ferry. Also the outlets in Portsmouth if you love shopping and parking was not an issue as usually is in ferry towns.

Breakfast was good for us and kids who are a nightmare eating breakfast managed to swallow it ok.

The kids complained the sofabeds were very uncomfortable though so advice is to take in a memory foam topper if you have a sofabed for kids. Kids' in-house services were available but we just didn't have the time for them to utilise them.

Generally we were happy with our stay and would go back.

Room Tip: Rooms on the A road side are a nightmare, just didn't want to be uncivil and ask for refund but...
