“Perfect location, brilliant room.”

We stayed here for one night at the end of January. It was a bit odd walking into the hotel and then having to go up a floor before you even get to the reception but heyho. The receptionist was lovely when greeting us. In the lift you need a room key to get any higher then the first floor which was a brilliant security touch. Don't want any randomers walking around now..

The corridor on our floor was being repainted but there wasn't that horrible paint smell, thankfully. We entered our room and was pleasantly surprised. We normally stay in the usual Holiday Inns and never an express and so thought this would be extremely basic and not at all aestheticly pleasing. We were wrong. The bed was comfy (althought could have been a bit firmer), a nice sofa which I'm guessing would be pulled out as a spare bed for a third/forth person, TV was a nice size, desk, the usual kettle and drink making accessories and the mini wardrobe with hangers. The bathroom/toilet was nicely sized too. We found the fact you can separate the toilet moreso from the bathroom amusing too.

We had a good nights sleep, no noise whatsoever. One of us is a light sleeper and still never woke up even though there is some nightlife going on outside. Can't comment on the breakfast as we never had it.

If I had to choose somewhere in Portsmouth to base myself to get to landmarks and things to do/see I'd definitely stay here again. We booked about 2 weeks in advance and got a double room for £67. Bargain.

Many thanks for taking the time to review the Hotel.
As you say the Reception area of the Hotel is on the first floor, we have re decorated the ground floor entrance and are fitting new lighting to improve this area and to make it more welcoming.
I was delighted to read that the Receptionist was lovely when you arrived and I will ensure that your comments are passed on to the team, we realise that security for our guests is very important which is why we have the card readers in the lifts, so all guests that are not staying with us must come to Reception.
We are currently re decorating certain areas of the Hotel which is now almost complete, we do use the safest and least noticeable products to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.
Great to read that you found the bedroom to be a good size and that all the facilities in the room exceeded your expectations of a Holiday Inn Express, Gunwharf Quays is a very busy complex so it was pleasing to read that you did not hear any noise and had a great nights sleep with us, we do have triple glazed windows in the all the bedrooms to try and keep the noise levels to a minimum.
Booking in advance is a great way to get discounted rates at the Hotel, please either check our website or telephone us direct to ensure you are aware of the best rates available for your next stay with us, I look forward to welcoming you back to the Hotel in the near future and once again thank you for taking the time to review the Hotel.

“Flexibility”

Thanks go to the receptionist who changed my non-refundable booking for an earlier date following the cancellation of my French Easter holiday later this year by the gite owners. Since we were holidaying on the Isle of Wight during February half term I'm very pleased I didn't lose any more money.

Hotel was clean, quiet and has good sized rooms with comfortable beds. Some redecoration of the corridors was taking place, but any disturbances were kept to a minimum and the hotel used low odour paint - a nice touch.

Conveniently located with access to shops and bars I'd recommend the hotel for both an overnight or longer stay. Isle of Wight ferry company a short distance away.

Reception is on the first floor and the lobby area is ok, but could be made more welcoming since my first impressions were proved wrong, the hotel being smarter than anticipated initially.

I'd book again whenever in Portsmouth.

Thank you for your review of the Hotel, I was delighted to read that you found the Receptionist to be very helpful and accommodating in terms of transferring your non refundable and non transferable booking to another date, we do try to be as accommodating as we can with regard to these bookings.
It was great to read that you found the Hotel to be clean, with good sized rooms and that you found the beds to be comfortable, as our aim is for all our guests to have a great nights sleep when they stay with us, all rooms are fitted with triple glazed windows to keep the noise to a minimum.
We are currently re decorating the Hotel and have now almost completed the areas we needed to do, the lobby area on the ground floor has now been re decorated and looks much improved and we do have plans to put in new lighting in that area to make the area a little more welcoming, we do try to use the safest and least noticeable products when re decorating to try and keep the disruption to a minimum whilst these essential works take place.
As you say, the location of the Hotel is fantastic, with all of Gunwharf Quays shops, Bars and Restaurants all on the Hotels doorstep, great to hear you will be back here next time you are in Portsmouth, we look forward to welcoming you back and once again many thanks for taking the time to review the Hotel.

“Good location; tired entrance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Our family stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for 4 nights in July 2011, using it as a base from which to explore the Hampshire area. The positives for us were: the convenient location, the staff friendliness and the no-frills breakfast. The negatives were: the shoddy entrance and access to the hotel, the parking inconvenience and the beds that kept moving around (on well-oiled castors!). Overall the hotel offered decent value though - we will revisit.

Room Tip: Beds move around too easily - you cannot really prop yourself up on a pillow to read the papers (the...

Many thanks for taking the time out of your day to review the Hotel, since July 2011 we have been working hard to improve the Hotel and alot of work has been completed. We have redecorated the entrance area and lobby of the Hotel and we have plans to also improve the lighting in the lobby to create a warm welcome for all guests, we have also redecorated the Reception area, the great room and the bedroom corridors of the Hotel which all now look fantastic.
The location of the Hotel is great, situated on Gunwharf Quays with a wide choice of shops, bars and restaurants, Spinnaker tower and the historic dockyard are also just a few minutes walk away from the Hotel.
I was delighted to read that you enjoyed our complimentary breakfast and the team were very friendly during your visit and I will ensure that your comments are read by all.
Car parking is in the main Gunwharf Quays car park which is located a couple of minutes walk away from the Hotel, we do have a drop off/pick up area outside the entrance to the Hotel, the car park charges are significantly discounted for Hotel guests, charges being free for the first 24 hours or exit and £2 per 24 hours or per exit thereafter.
I have not come across this problem with the beds before therefore as you say it may have just been that particular room, I apologise for this and rest assured I will speak to my maintenance manager to check this in all rooms to ensure we do not have this problem again.
It was great to read that you found the Hotel to be value for money and that you will be visiting us again, I look forward to welcoming you back and once again thank you for the review.

“Pleasant stay but looking a little tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I have stayed many times in the Holiday Inn chain of hotels, so did have some pre-conceptions of what to expect.

First the positives:
Good sized room , and a comfortable bed, had the option of firm or soft pillows which is a nice touch as many hotels only seem to have the standard option. Had a really good nights sleep.
Staff - all members of staff were really friendly and couldn't do more ot assist, especially the lady on reception.
The bathroom was clean and bright with plenty of space for toiletries etc.

now the negatives:
The decor inside the main hotel was OK, but what was noticeable was the marks all over the carpet. It looked clean, but there were many patches that we ingrained with something!
The airconditioning in my room did not work at all, so there was no other heating rather than the ambiant from the hallway! I did not mention it at the time I realised, as it was getting late and so I got into bed and stayed warm that way.
The carpet in the room had a "nice" iron mark on it and although clean it had obviously seen better days.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Hotel after your recent stay.
It was great to read that you have stayed in the Holiday Inn chain of Hotels many times and I trust that you will continue to do so.
I was pleased to read that you found the room to be a good size and it had a comfortable bed for you, also the offer of soft and firm pillows is a nice touch as this allows all guests to have a great nights sleep, the bathrooms in all the bedrooms are very spacious and very well lit and kept to a high standard of cleanliness.
It was a delight to read that the team were really friendly and could not do more to assist you, I will, as with all reviews, ensure that your comments are passed onto the team.
We are at present re decorating the Hotel and all carpets in the Hotel are also being professionally cleaned, I trust you will notice the next time you are visiting us.
With regard to the air conditioning in your room, I apologise that it was not working during your visit, I will ensure that my maintenance manager has rectified the problem, should this have been mentioned to us at the time, I am sure we would have accommodated you in another room in the Hotel to ensure that your stay was as comfortable as possible.
Once again many thanks for taking the time to review the Hotel.

“Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We have just reurned from a 3 night stay at the hotel and we could not have chosen better. The location is great for everything, historic dockyard, spinniker tower, waterside and shops, all within walking distance. We left our car in the car park and walked everywhere. The hotel parking was very cheap for city centre parking. The staff were all friendly and helpful and very cheerful. The hotel itself was a typical Holiday Inn Express, quite a good sized room but the standard Express layout. It was very clean, tidy and comfortable and up to our expectationsThe breakfast was excellent although it was reasonably busy we always managed to find a table, it did warn you in the bedroom that the breakfast area was busy between certain hours so we just went a slightly different time to the busy hour and it was great, plenty of choice and the hot meal was fresh and hot.
No complaints at all and would certainly go back to the hotel if I was in Portsmouth again A credit to all the staff working there.

Many thanks for taking the time to review the Hotel, I was delighted to read that the Hotel exceeded your expectations and that you had a fabulous stay with us.
It was great to read that you found the team to be friendly, helpful and cheerful, your comments mean such a lot to us and as with all reviews I will share your comments with the team.
As you say City Centre car parking can be expensive these days and as our location is right in the heart of Gunwharf Quays with all its attractions, our discounted parking, really is a great deal.
It was fantastic that you found our complimentary breakfast excellent as we have been working hard to improve this, as you say it can be very busy at times so a great idea to take breakfast at a slightly different time.
Thanks again for a great review and I trust I will be seeing you at the Hotel again soon.
