“BAD BED let this nice place down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

On first sight the hotel waslovely. It has a car park which is very convenient.
Its definitely not walking distance from the pier!
There was a wedding taking place whist we were staying so we had no access to the restaurant.
The room was a nice size and looked onto a side street, we could have requested a sea view but we were fussed as we wouldn’t really be spending much time in the room. Everything seems clean, until i spilt some water on the bed sheet and saw a yellow line appear around the rim.
We also paid for a double bed, NOT two single mattresses which formed our double bed This caused a lot of discomfort, in addition the matress it self was uncomfortable and pillows werent great either. Quite a disappointment as everything else was lovely!

“Tired old Hotel, unhelpful front desk staff. Best Avioded.”

Stayed here as part of a group booking. The room that I had was tiny, hot and not very clean. i asked if another room was available and received little help or care from the front desk. I stay in hotels whilst away on business about 200 nights a year for the last 25 years, and this is one of the worst I've had the misfortune to stay at. I would avoid it like the plague.

“Faded Grandeur - a little TLC would reap dividends”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

Stayed here with my wife whilst attending meetings in Portsmouth. I had stayed here previously some years ago whilst I think it was part of the Best Western group. We got an excellent overnight B&B deal on a four-poster, seaview/balcony room for just a little more than the cost of staying at the (decidedly average) Premier Inn just down the road. Our room was spacious, airy and comfortable but sadly lacking in some of the niceties one might expect from a 'Grand Old Hotel'. The addition of complimentary mineral water and bathrobes would be a great place to start. Better maintenance routines would ensure that minor issues such as the loose tap we found in our bathroom and the grubby shower screen would not let the place down. (A glass shower screen and no slip mat provided in the bath? An accident waiting to happen?) The decor outside the rooms was in desperate need of a facelift as the scuff marks on the walls and chipped doorways was a little disappointing. The hotel proudly boasts a 'Champagne Bar', which would be great if only it were open other than weekends or even if the regular bar stocked a wider selection than the rather pedestrian fare offered on the wine list. All that said, the staff were friendly and helpful and we had a pleasant stay. With a little investment and a bit of attention to detail this could be a much improved establishment.

“Review Sept 2011”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Nice clean hotel, the room was spacious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Quite a distance from Portsmouth Quays -but it only costs £4.80 in a taxi . There is a good bus stop round the corner from the hotel that takes you directly to Portsmouth Quays - the number 6. It is only £1.90 odd bus fare. Rooms get very hot at night as there is no air conditioning but you can request fans at reception. Overall nice hotel but location is bit far out from portsmouth city centre

“Our Wedding Day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

From the moment we viewed this grand lady we knew it was for us (we viewed many). Throughout the organisation of the wedding, including our unusual requests, the staff were always accomodating. The food & service on the day were exceptional. We stayed in total for 4 nights so experienced the hotel as both guests and bride & groom. As guests, the room was outstanding with superb sea views & the breakfast was excellent with a large choice of quality food. The food in the restaurant on the eve of the wedding day was top quality. The mussels were in a fantastic sauce & the fish was cooked to perfection & was good value. Again the service was excellent with them coping easily with an unexpected request for a table of 15. We had a total of 100 people, with most staying at the Queens for 2 nights & having spoken to them they all had high praise for the hotel & intend to return. Some of our guests only book 5 star and stated "what a find, what a gem". Thank you Queens for making our wedding day the one we had always dreamed of & see you soon.

Room Tip: It's definitely worth asking for a seaview. Also most of the family rooms are 2 bedroomed.
