“Perfectly fine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We booked to stay here because it was close to the start of the Great South Run. Very acceptable rooms, plenty of space and clean.

Dinner was good, the menu had five or six main dishes and similar number of starters. Nothing too fancy, but perfectly acceptable. The staff were very accommodating of our peculiar runners' dietary requirements, giving me a double portion of ravioli. Similarly, there was porridge for breakfast.

The staff are this hotel's gem, friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We'll be staying here again for the Great South Run next year.

“Needs to be renamed!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Our stay was a disappointment and has a chain run feel despite it's name.
The decor is modern but very worn, lots of chipped paint and wallpaper throughout. One velour cushion and a bed runner doesnt make a boutique hotel!
Our room had a huge floor lamp without a single bulb in it and when we arrive we had to ask several times for a tv remote. Lots of handles came off in our hands and the toilet roll holder was broken. With only 7 rooms it seems bizarre that basic room checks have not been completed. I strongly suggest that the manager stays in the rooms to experience the bathroom that has no blind and is therefore unusable for those of us that would prefer to shower in private! (We did point out our concerns to the manager and he said he was already aware of our concerns!
The food was NOT of gastropub standard. There is no indication of local produce used (the basic value yoghurts were from scotland!) for instance. Despite award winning sausages available within 100yards. There were 2 cereals on offer and the cheapest type apple and orange juice. No Danish, croissant etc available. The full English was basic at best. On Fri the breakfast alternative was over peppered scrambled eggs on toast (inedible) and on Sat it was just beans on toast! The receptionist/breakfast waiter was pleasant but the manager couldnt even raise a smile in the morning. It's a real shame because there is huge potential here with a lovely bar and restaurant. If you go out locally for a meal - we strongly recommend The Belle Isle - great value fresh food and service :-).
Overall we wished we'd stayed in a basic hotel and paid more for a decent breakfast in one of the lovely local restaurants!

“What excellent staff!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

We stayed here in order that my wife could take part in the Great South run. I could make some pedantic and picky points about the absence of wardrobe space but overall this hotel is good value for money. It has an excellent central location, the Full English breakfast was of high quality, and the bar and restaurant are very comfortable. But by far our lasting memory will be how superb the couple who are managing the hotel are. Welcoming, very, very efficient and nothing is too much trouble. Well done to you both and many thanks.

i stayed here for a night with my girlfriend and would definatly go back.

it is in a great place, two minuites walk from the coast and the aquarium. parking isnt great but for a £10 depost they will give you a permit to park on the surrounding streets. i found the people there very very nice(which is why im writing this review really) and the food was lovely.

all in all a great, friendly and clean place to stay.

i came here with my wife for a few days away.on arriving to the hotel we greeted by a lovely french couple called jo and christoph.our room was great very clean ,tidy and well aired.the bed was a little soft but (i like a hard bed).
we asked if the restaurant was open because we were meeting friends, they replied with a yes,so we booked a table for seven thirty.when seated we were given warm flavoursome bread ,this is complementary and flavoured butter.they tell me the chef does it himself and changes it every week.what can i say other than superb.when it came to ordering we were in a pickle,a good well balanced menu does that.we opted for two crab quiche a pate and a goats cheese , again fantastic realy preppared with care.main courses we ordered a duck breast a steak frittes a seabss and a beef bourginoun.everything was perfect again cracking food and very good service.we drank some very good fine wines carefully chosen by the man himself christoph.when desserts came they were the best.recommend a visit
