“No welcome in the room...just a list of extra charges for soiling!”

We booked two rooms for two nights to visit family and thought that the £70 per night room only charge (no breakfast) was a bit pricey, considering the budget hotels were charging between £20 and £40 less! However, it was close to the family we were visiting so we pressed on.
Disappointingly we were given two tired rooms at the front of the pub; the rooms had no 'welcome to the hotel' information but a list of extra charges for 'soiling' the room; soiled sheets, soiled mattress, damage to furniture etc etc! What sort of place had we booked in at???!!! My son's room also had a smelly shower room and he had to use ours instead. Certainly NOT worth the £70 price tag. We did sleep well however but wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend it to family or friends.

Room Tip: Erm....ask to see your room before you check in.

“Service is apalling”

I went into the Duke of Buckingham to enquire about a room for when my parents came to see me for 3 days. My dad is disabled so I asked to see the rooms and asked for a ground floor on with space in the bathroom. When my parents arrived after a 5 hour drive they were out in the garage which had no wardrobe, no room to move and a bathroom my dad could not possibly use. The person who had shown me round and taken my details had 'forgotten' to write it in the book. I was absolutely disgusted. I complained and they said they had a guest who had not checked in who they could swop rooms with but this room was up a steep flight of steps. After talking to the people who run this place both in person and over the phone they still could not take the correct booking and not my dad has no choice but to try to get up some stairs so that he can at least use the bathroom and with one leg he will struggle. I am totally disgusted at this service. The place doesn't serve food yet and the drinks are also overpriced. The rooms are generally nice and the ones in the cottage have just been refurbished but the garage is an awful place to out people I have no idea why they refurbished it. If you go here sent them an email to confirm your requirements and geta room in the cottage.

“Great location and good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2011

The pub is in Old Portsmouth and although our room faced the main road it wasn't particularly noisy. There is a reasonable Chinese restaurant over the road, and the pub is about a mile from the Harbour station and is an easy walk to Gunwharf Quays. The area is attractive, with some quaint back streets. Staff were friendly. The room was fine as was the ensuite shower room (though we had to phone down for a member of staff to show us how it worked - but no problem). No frills, but clean, good TV and perfectly comfortable. Breakfast was help yourself Continental (the croissants were rather sad) but plenty of bread for toast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit were available. Pretty good value at less than £45 for a double room, and I would stay there again next time in Portsmouth.

“Reasonable with a few mishaps”

I booked my room over the phone, and ordered an early check in. When I got to this B&B, the family room I ordered wasnt ready as they only expected one person. To their credit, they got the family room sorted very quickly and were very apologetic. The rooms are nicely decorated although the en-suite could do with a little work. The main downside to my stay was the fact we had no hot water for our shower in the morning, the water was freezing! Apart from that, our stay was good. We stayed in one of the cottage rooms so was nice and quiet, with no noise from the pub. I would stay here again.

“Basic - but everything you need!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2011

The hotel is in a great loacation, 5mins walk as you turn left out of the hotel to gunwharf quays, and a 5 min walk as you turn right out of the hotel to the beach.
The room was very clean and newly refurbished.
A bit on the small side but we had enough room to put our bags etc.
Could have done with some more pillows, as we only had one each and they were quite thin.
There was also only enough coffee/tea facilities to make one cup..
No complimentary toiletries whatsoever, just a small bar of soap.
Only 2 coat hangers!
Wi-fi wasn't working, there was a sign up saying they were 'experiencing problems'

All in all, value for money! Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends!
