I stayed here with my adult son. We asked for a twin room and were given room 8, which has a double bed & single bed crammed into an attic room with sloping ceiling. The double bed wasn't very comfortable, having a very thin mattress on a very hard base. The single bed was okay. There was a strong musty smell in the room, although the room appeared clean, apart from the very dusty & decaying "dried flowers plaque" which may be the source of the problem.
We shared a bathroom with the other room on the top floor. This was well equipped with a powerful shower. Sadly, the bracket for holding the shower head had snapped so you ended up wrestling with the shower nozzle which writhed like an angry serpent. The grouting needs replacing too, as there are patches of black mould.
The building is typical for the area being tall & narrow with four storeys. There are lots of steps, especially if you are on the top floor like us, with the breakfast room in the basement. Breakfast was okay with cereal & juice and the choice of a cooked meal plus toast & tea or coffee. Sadly my egg was overcooked to the point that all of the white was crispy and the yolk was hard through. Very good bacon.
On the plus side the new manageress was pleasant and the location is very good, one block back from the seafront and a 15 minute walk to central Southsea where there are a number of good restaurants and the Kings Theatre. The B&B was also amenable when I needed to move my booking due to illness.
The other thing that bothered me were the notices that appeared everwhere. Quite stark with black type on A4 paper. Some of them were worded in quite a terse manner such as, "we will not answer the door outside these hours" and "guests found eating in their room will be asked to leave." The last one being rather ironic as they supply tea making equipment and a selection of biscuits!
I might give this B&B another chance to endear itself to me, but I won't want to be on the top floor: although they might not want me back!
Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground or first floor. Avoid if more than a few steps are a problem.
