“Very nice for a special occasion but expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed on Saturday 11th Feb 2012 for my wife's birthday. We also had dinner for 6.
I had read mixed reviews on the rooms and whether they represent value for money. Our initial impression of the hotel was very pleasent. Well decorated and warm with a freindly welcome. I had on the advice of the receptionist Nina booked the Canteiro at a cost of £210. It had a luxurious feel, was spacious with a large bed, a small seating area and a large bathroom with a roll top bath and a rainhead shower. The bed was very comfortable. The lounge and bar area are small but well appointed. On a sunny summers day there is a pool and a large outside verander which looked very nice. We had a table of 6 for dinner. Service was first class as was the food. You could not fault the attention to detail. The wine list was extensive but for anyone on a budget prices started at about £18 and there was loads of choice from £20 - £30. The young lady sommelier recommended a bottle of Rose at £24 which was very nice as was the cheapest Rose champagne at £47. Dinner with 2 bottles of champagne, a bottle of wine, water and coffee was £71 per head. Not cheap but we all agreed that it was a lovely night and acceptable for a special occassion. I reckon for just two with a reasonable bottle of wine you can count on £60 per head. Overall then a very good experience. Back to the point on the rooms being value for money. Can any room be worth £200 a night? Ours was very comfortable but I feel expensive and I doubt if we will stay again as we only live an hour away. We will however definately return for dinner or Sunday lunch and I would recommend to my friends.

Room Tip: Canteiro was nice but expensive

“Excellent, understated hotel”

We stayed here for a weekend based around a special celebration meal for 20 people on the Sunday. The rooms were perfect, our saturday evening meal in the restaurant was delicious and we could not have been better looked after for the celebration meal on the sunday in the private dining facility. Although approaching the hotel from the Southampton direction is slightly underwhelming, the opposite approach through the New Forest is delightful. Although it is a hotel, the feel is more of a private country house or a restaurant with lovely rooms attached.

“Excellent value birthday treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Spent one night here for my wifes birthday and had the winter special rate of £215 including dinner, b&b, glass of Pressecco and Hot Chocolate for 2. Our room was really nice and comfortable. The food is outstanding considering the price and worthy of greater recognition then it currently gets and it has one of the best wine lists I've seen when taking into account variety, choice and price. So often you see big wine menus with half a dozen £30-£40 bottles and then page after page of overpriced fairly average options. Here you just get page after page of good wine priced below £40. I'm not too sure about how their regular room rates compare price wise but on this deal with this quality you really can't go wrong.

“Fantastic small hotel and amazing food and wine”

Had a fantastic stay here. We had one of the smaller rooms but it was really nicely furnished and very comfortable - all the rooms have outside space too which was a great touch. As budding wine enthusiasts we were particularly interested to meet the sommelier and explore as many of the wines as possible. Laura was very friendly and helpful, she showed us the authentic cellars before dinner and guided us through the tasting menu. Food was really excellent and we had some fantastic wines with it.
The hotel is a great base to explore the New Forest too. Overall I'd definitely recommend it.
