“Absolutely Lovely! Can't wait to go back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

My boyfriend and I recently visited Wesley House for a 2 night (much needed) break. Only being an hour from home it was close enough so it wasn’t a mission to get there from home but far enough away so we felt that we were getting away. When we arrived we found the hotel easily and parked in the long stay car park as direct by the very friendly staff in the hotel. We arrived on the Sunday and shown to our room which was toward the back of the hotel and shown where the switches were to the bathroom and the shower etc. The front of house staff explained that the hotel and restaurant was closed on Sunday and that we would be on our own. He then left us to settle in and to start the bottle of champagne which was placed in our room at our request. The room itself was nicely furnished and cosy in appearance with an en-suit bathroom. There was a tea tray with fresh milk and what i would assume were homemade biscuits in a little glass jar. This was a lovely touch and gave the room a personal touch. For us the only disappointing aspect of our stay was the room itself. The bed was only a queen size and for two people used to a double we were a little cramped. The room was small and the bathroom even smaller and in the room there was no information on the surrounding area. Winchcombe is a lovely town steeped in history but you wouldn’t have known it existed! Even though the hotel has its own restaurant it would have been useful to know (seeing as it was a Sunday and the restaurant was closed) about places to eat. We ate at the White Hart next door that evening and can't praise it enough. It was brilliant value for money and the food was lovely. Breakfast at Wesley house was really lovely. Prunes and Yogurt, Croissants and then full English Breakfast, tea or coffee and plenty of toast with jam or marmalade. The morning staff were lovely and everything was very relaxed.

On the second night of our stay we had dinner at the hotel and this is where the flawless service and excellent reviews came to light. We had drinks in the bar and nibbles and then canapés before we were taken through to the stunning restaurant. The food was lovely and the wine list was extensive and lots of information was given on each wine. We were served with confidence and finesse. The food was amazing. I cannot say anymore.

Before going to bed that night we asked what time we needed to be out of the room we were told "11:30, 12:00. There is no rush." this was lovely and gave us a chance to finish our break in a leisurely style.

I would recommend Wesley House to anyone for a special weekend away and we will definitely be returning.

“Nice restaurant - but if you must stay there, avoid "Setchley's Room"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

We stayed at Wesley House while on a hiking holiday in the Cotswolds. The restaurant looked really good, although we did not end up eating there. The breakfast in the morning was delicious. This pretty inn is quite old and as another reviewer pointed out, interesting architecturally.
Our room, however, was a huge let-down. It was nicely appointed, but absolutely miniscule, but that was the least of the problems. This particular room, "Setchley's Room" (all the rooms have names) had the *fire escape* (!!!) for the entire floor as its main "window"! There was a plastic cup affixed to the hall side of the door (over a small handle) which was to be broken in the event of a fire, and which would allow the door to be unlocked without a key. Besides the glass fire escape door, there was only one other tiny window, about 18 inches square. On the wall above the fire escape door was a large sign saying "FINAL EXIT". Not exactly sleep-inducing as you are lying there looking up. The individual who showed us our room blithely pointed out that "that humming noise you hear is from the pub next door, that should stop when they close the kitchen around 11". The back end of this pub (which, incidentally, makes delicious food) is directly below Setchley's room. The humming noise was actually the least of our problems - once the kitchen stopped making food and the fan was shut off, the employees sat outside and yammered for an hour or so, as they were dumping all their empty bottles and garbage and whatever else outside. We needed the one tiny window open for some air as it was hot in the room and also because there was an air freshener plugged into the wall which had left our room with an awful cloying scent. We did not feel comfortable sleeping with the fire escape door open!
Then at five in the morning, someone was outside smashing around in the bottles that had been dumped noisily behind the pub when it closed a few hours earlier.
The bed was small, as English beds tend to be, but the bedding did not fit it well, so by the time two people tried to sleep in it, all the blankets, etc. became untucked.
Needless to say, a very bad night and certainly not a £90 room. What was particularly disappointing was that this accommodation had been booked about about four months earlier, and was this the best they could do?

“a wonderful gem - food great & room comfortable and very pretty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
As others have said these are rooms above a restaurant. Eating in the restaurant was a wonderful experience. The food was lovely and the service/experience thoroughly enjoyable - we felt really spoilt. Breakfast was a joy - everything cooked to order.
The room we had was small but very nicely designed and comfortable. The building is all nooks and crannies. This is a million miles away from from a large corporate "could be in any town" hotel.

“Beautiful Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2010

The greatest surprise at Wesley House is the contrast between bedrooms and restaurant. The restaurant is understated, contemporary elegance and the bedrooms...aren't. The focus is unquestionnably on the Restaurant where we ate and enjoyed beautiful food in an elegant cotswold room which was well-lit; I don't mean well-lit as in its got bright lights and you could read the menu from a mile away but the intersting up-lighters and low level lighting added to the overall drama of the place.

The food was delicious and well crafted, not over-powering nor some confused French-style menu but great food cooked well in a beautiful surrounding.

The bedrooms are mentioned to say they are not in the same league as the restaurant, the showers are poor but work and the rooms are more compact than spacious but its all there.

COme for the food and the setting its spectacular, enjoy their bar next door but don't get yourself too excited about the bedrooms this really is a Restaurant (with Rooms)

“Very comfortable place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2010

Really good place to stay. I was walking the Cotswolds Way, and - arriving in pouring rain - I got a good welcome, and the room was very comfortable. I also ate there in the evening, and the food was delicious. I remember interesting courses that I hadn't ordered (but didn't have pay for) kept arriving - and the things I had ordered were also delicious. Breakfast was good. Nothing to complain about.
