“Perfect Cotswold experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

My husband and I first stayed at Wesley House Easter weekend 2010. My husband had what he referred to as the best meal of his life and so we returned for new years eve this year. Plush, beautifully lit, warm and inviting 16th century building right in the heart of winchcombe, possibly my favourite town in England! You have to accept it's 16th century (or thereabouts) and deal with the rooms being a little "snug" and the bathroom on the teeny side...we stayed in the best room, with gorgeous balcony and view over Sudeley Castle. Totally worth it and reasonably priced. New years eve dinner dance was amazing, fabulous service, 5 course meal, my husband now says THIS was the best meal of his life (foie gras, beef Wellington, choc torte and my creme brûlée) instead!! Huge selection of cheese for all to enjoy.
Matthew, the proprietor is incredibly helpful and made us feel like house guests. We love staying there and will always be back.

“quaint and welcoming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We stayed here in December and the christmas decorations were fabulous,we stayed in the almsbury room with the terrace, unfortunately we couldnt see the castle. The food was fabulous no complaints at all, the room was small but it is an old building full of character, if you want a large plush room and bathroom go and stay in a big hotel, we would definately return to wesley house if we got the chance and we were made very welcome by Matthew the proprieter and his staff, they made sure that everything was ok for us, thanks for a great pre christmas break we really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: the bed was sooooooo comfy in our room and it was really quiet.

“Overpriced and out of date”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

As with other reviewers, we stayed in the 'Sketchley' room, to which the answer is - don't. In this day and age, this shouldn't be allowed.Small and almost claustrophobic, with a shower using one of those useless instant electric water heaters, it was a place to leave as soon as feasible. Dinner was pleasantly done, though quality was more at the level of gastropub than michelin 'wannabe'. Rather heavy handed, and actually too much food, which is awkward with a fixed price menu. Reasonable wine list, attentive staff, and missing management. Breakfast was good, though by then we had given up on the whole place.

Room Tip: Avoid 'Sketchley', and ask to see at check-in.

Matthew Jones, Manager at Wesley House, responded to this review

We are sorry to read that you did not enjoy your stay at Wesley House. We would like to offer you some recompense if you would like to get in touch with us. We are a 15th Century building and are limited to the size of our bedrooms, and although small in size we hope guests find them characterful. Having no loft space for hot water tanks, electric showers are our only option. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to comment. It is only with feedback from our guests that we are able to improve our standards. We are sorry no member of management spoke to you before you left. Matthew Brown

“Is everything ok?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We were asked this question a few times during our recent stay and the answer to this question is yes. However, we were hoping for a little bit more. On the plus side our room with the terrace allowed a great couple of hours just sitting with a chilled bottle wine taking in the view. The staff were attentive and the full cooked breakfast got a thumbs up from the other half. As others have mentioned the shower needs a health and safety warning! Either red hot or cold and nothing in between. The bed is also a small double neither of us is very big and a couple of more substantial proportions might struggle to fit. The let down was the food. It was ok - but not two rosette standard. My blue cheese tart starter was very strong and left a lingering taste (probably a poor choice on my part). The ravioli starter was slightly 'rough' and both fish slightly overcooked. Deserts were the best course - I enjoyed the creme brûlée and the chocolate tort very rich. So nothing really to complain about but the food was just not as good as the other restaurants with rooms we have visited overvthe past 2 to 3 years.

Room Tip: If it's nice go for the terrace room - it's worth the extra £10 per night

“Great character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights in September 2011. There is no parking but a public car park is only about 200 yards walk after 'dumping' luggage into front door. The Inn has bags of character but its age means that space and layout are not ideal. There is a steep and difficult staircase to the rooms and our room (Almsbury) was relatively compact. The bathroom was very small and the shower (no bath) had an electric power shower which was very difficult to control. Otherwise, the bedroom was OK with a door to rooftop terrace with fantastic views. The restaurant appears to be the core business and breakfasts are excellent. We had dinner one night which was around £85 including two glasses of wine - about what we would expect to pay for this standard. The restaurant has loads of orchids to help decorate it.

Room Tip: Almsbury is only room with outside rooftop terrace and great views.
