“Great character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights in September 2011. There is no parking but a public car park is only about 200 yards walk after 'dumping' luggage into front door. The Inn has bags of character but its age means that space and layout are not ideal. There is a steep and difficult staircase to the rooms and our room (Almsbury) was relatively compact. The bathroom was very small and the shower (no bath) had an electric power shower which was very difficult to control. Otherwise, the bedroom was OK with a door to rooftop terrace with fantastic views. The restaurant appears to be the core business and breakfasts are excellent. We had dinner one night which was around £85 including two glasses of wine - about what we would expect to pay for this standard. The restaurant has loads of orchids to help decorate it.

Room Tip: Almsbury is only room with outside rooftop terrace and great views.

“Needs to pull its socks up.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

Winchcombe is a fascinating medaeval town and virtually every building on the main streets is several hundred years old. That being the case, you would expect that hotel rooms will be cramped, low-ceilinged, with so-so bathrooms and the top of winding, creaky staircases. That is certainly the case at The Welsey House. So, the room being just adequate, we looked to the food to rescue the situation. The dining room is very pleasant indeed with lots of light and the service is friendly if not particularly efficient. The food is like the curate's egg: good in parts. Here, as in many places in the UK, there are signs that the chef thinks he (or she) is Michaelangelo and that his (or her) artistic prowess is more important than being true to the ingredients. This is an abominable trend which seems ot be sweeping the world and is probably attributable to these TV celebrity chefs who stack and drizzle, foam and fiddle with food instead of letting good ingredients speak for themselves. A huge negative with the Wesley House is that it has no parking and you have leave your car blocks away and drag your luggage along the bustling streets. Prices are not exorbitant, but neither is value high.

“Constantly excellent - apart from that Setchley Room!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2011

We've stayed a couple of times within the last six months and I agree with every positive comment by other reviewers. Warmth of welcome, quality of food, those little extra touches etc. However, I'd also agree with the comments on the Setchley Room. First time we stayed in one of the front rooms - quaint and lovely. But the Setchley Room should contain a warning. I too felt very uncomfortable with the fire exit running through the room and there was a really bad draught coming through the fire escape door. I just about forgave them because of the fresh milk in the room instead of those awful little plastic pots, the bowl of fruit on the turn of the stairs and all the thoughtful extras. Visitors should have pointed out to them the disadvantages of this room when booking - we were not. It should also be priced accordingly. But we were quoted less for it than on our previous visit. If you want to ensure a choice of rooms you need to book well ahead.

“Absolutely Lovely! Can't wait to go back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

My boyfriend and I recently visited Wesley House for a 2 night (much needed) break. Only being an hour from home it was close enough so it wasn’t a mission to get there from home but far enough away so we felt that we were getting away. When we arrived we found the hotel easily and parked in the long stay car park as direct by the very friendly staff in the hotel. We arrived on the Sunday and shown to our room which was toward the back of the hotel and shown where the switches were to the bathroom and the shower etc. The front of house staff explained that the hotel and restaurant was closed on Sunday and that we would be on our own. He then left us to settle in and to start the bottle of champagne which was placed in our room at our request. The room itself was nicely furnished and cosy in appearance with an en-suit bathroom. There was a tea tray with fresh milk and what i would assume were homemade biscuits in a little glass jar. This was a lovely touch and gave the room a personal touch. For us the only disappointing aspect of our stay was the room itself. The bed was only a queen size and for two people used to a double we were a little cramped. The room was small and the bathroom even smaller and in the room there was no information on the surrounding area. Winchcombe is a lovely town steeped in history but you wouldn’t have known it existed! Even though the hotel has its own restaurant it would have been useful to know (seeing as it was a Sunday and the restaurant was closed) about places to eat. We ate at the White Hart next door that evening and can't praise it enough. It was brilliant value for money and the food was lovely. Breakfast at Wesley house was really lovely. Prunes and Yogurt, Croissants and then full English Breakfast, tea or coffee and plenty of toast with jam or marmalade. The morning staff were lovely and everything was very relaxed.

On the second night of our stay we had dinner at the hotel and this is where the flawless service and excellent reviews came to light. We had drinks in the bar and nibbles and then canapés before we were taken through to the stunning restaurant. The food was lovely and the wine list was extensive and lots of information was given on each wine. We were served with confidence and finesse. The food was amazing. I cannot say anymore.

Before going to bed that night we asked what time we needed to be out of the room we were told "11:30, 12:00. There is no rush." this was lovely and gave us a chance to finish our break in a leisurely style.

I would recommend Wesley House to anyone for a special weekend away and we will definitely be returning.

“Nice restaurant - but if you must stay there, avoid "Setchley's Room"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

We stayed at Wesley House while on a hiking holiday in the Cotswolds. The restaurant looked really good, although we did not end up eating there. The breakfast in the morning was delicious. This pretty inn is quite old and as another reviewer pointed out, interesting architecturally.
Our room, however, was a huge let-down. It was nicely appointed, but absolutely miniscule, but that was the least of the problems. This particular room, "Setchley's Room" (all the rooms have names) had the *fire escape* (!!!) for the entire floor as its main "window"! There was a plastic cup affixed to the hall side of the door (over a small handle) which was to be broken in the event of a fire, and which would allow the door to be unlocked without a key. Besides the glass fire escape door, there was only one other tiny window, about 18 inches square. On the wall above the fire escape door was a large sign saying "FINAL EXIT". Not exactly sleep-inducing as you are lying there looking up. The individual who showed us our room blithely pointed out that "that humming noise you hear is from the pub next door, that should stop when they close the kitchen around 11". The back end of this pub (which, incidentally, makes delicious food) is directly below Setchley's room. The humming noise was actually the least of our problems - once the kitchen stopped making food and the fan was shut off, the employees sat outside and yammered for an hour or so, as they were dumping all their empty bottles and garbage and whatever else outside. We needed the one tiny window open for some air as it was hot in the room and also because there was an air freshener plugged into the wall which had left our room with an awful cloying scent. We did not feel comfortable sleeping with the fire escape door open!
Then at five in the morning, someone was outside smashing around in the bottles that had been dumped noisily behind the pub when it closed a few hours earlier.
The bed was small, as English beds tend to be, but the bedding did not fit it well, so by the time two people tried to sleep in it, all the blankets, etc. became untucked.
Needless to say, a very bad night and certainly not a £90 room. What was particularly disappointing was that this accommodation had been booked about about four months earlier, and was this the best they could do?
