“dated and out of touch”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Agree very much with previous guests. The B&B is greatly overpriced. The rooms look ok when you go in, but you soon see where important corners are cut. The mattresses are uncomfortable, the pillows and quilts are in desperate need of replacing, along with the sofa s laughingly called children's beds - wouldn't put my dog on it ! Breakfast was ok, though seriously lacking in any service. Wouldn't take children there, many annoying signs telling them not to do anything ranging from picking up stones on the gravel driveway, to sitting on the settees!

“wedding bliss...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Our daughter and son in law chose to have their wedding at this venue after much discussion about the negative comments on this site. All I can say is that they points raised were totally unfounded. From the moment we arrived on the Friday it was a perfect weekend. The staff were polite, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was warm, welcoming and plenty of hot water. The wedding itself was so very special and memorable. Every one worked together to ensure the very best of days. Julian appeared to make sure we were happy with things and Crown Caters provided a magificent meal. The alchol flowed and guest partied in to the early hours. We could have asked no more for our daughter very special day. so thank you and we are so glad we chose the venue.

Room Tip: take the family and book the bigger cottages

“Perfect Wedding Venue!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

Having hunted high and low for the perfect wedding venue we stumbled across the Great Tythe Barn and thought it looked wonderful, then we read trip advisor. However, we decided to make our own minds up by visiting the venue. We questioned the owner and staff about the negative comments and checked the accommodation out for ourselves. We could not believe the comments that had been made as they were totally untrue! As a result of our visit we booked the barn for our wedding.
Throughout the planning phase Rebecca and Bernadette were extremely helpful making the whole process as stress free as possible, nothing was too much for them.
The Barn were very flexible with ideas and the general running of the day, unlike other venues that were very restrivitve of what you can and cant do. We wanted our wedding not a rehash of somebody elses, in our view this venue fulfilled that.
The day itself was wonderful, all staff present were friendly attentive and helpful, the owner Julian was present but was not intrusive. He was happy for us to get on with the day and have a fun and enjoyable time.
We chose Crown Catering to organise the food, I can only say that they were incredible, five star service backed up with five star food.
We stayed in the Kiln Cottage, our families in the Bull Pen and the Maltings. All cottages were clean and warm, with hot running water. An ideal place to stay for the marriage weekend.
Some guests stayed in the B&B rooms, continential breakfast was fine, the rooms were modern, clean and warm. The only negative point being a couple of the rooms had poor shower pressure.
Overall we feel this an honest and true reflection of the wedding venue. Having visited several others the staff are as friendly and approachable as other venues but with a lot more flexibility and enthusiasm than most.
It was a perfect weekend from start to finish, we can definitely reccomend this to others as a wedding venue.

“Poor value for money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

The facts:

- 50% of people have rated this establishment either poor or terrible !
- It is ranked 14 / 14 of venues in Tetbury by TA

You would have thought that if you really cared about your clients and were in anyway interested in their feedback things would have changed by now.
The management comments on reviews but I get the feeling that they are deluded and are full of excuses.
I could't agree more with the number of complaints that keep on been echoed :
- lack of staff and service
- basic rooms
- over pricing
- 'continental' style breakfast without croissants, meat cuts or cheese.

The positives :
- Beautiful outbuildings and location

Our experience:
As we drove up the drive we thought it looked like a lovely place and there were numerous beautiful buildings. We thought that collecting your key from a board outside the laundry room, finding your room number and showing yourself to your room was rather impersonal. The managements excuse for lack of service or interest in guest is a 'quick check-in' . We stayed in room 15. As I opened the door I regressed to my student accommodation at my university's hall of residence. Admittedly the furniture was a little nicer but the basic and functionality of the room, brown carpet and cream walls didn't make it very homely. The room was freezing. We were the only name on the board as staying that night in the B&B ( I now know why ! ) a quick call to find out when we were coming to turn on the heating a few minutes before would have shown some degree of effort !
The room was tidy and I thought clean until I went to fill the basin and ran my fingers round the basin to find that my fingers didn't slide but instead felt grime from a previous guest.
We couldn't wait to go to our party hosted by the owners of Chavenage House and dreaded our return. It was pitch black . Some lights on sensors would be a good idea. We couldn't see a thing when walking to the room from the car park.
We read that for breakfast we used the fob on our keyring to enter the Orangerie. We opened the door following one of the many typed instructions found around the properties to enter a very empty space with a table and six chairs. No cutlery or crockery was laid out as one would expect in a B&B or hotel, just a white tablecloth. We looked at the breakfast spread. Very basic: 6 slices of toast, 2 types of cereals , 3 containers with seeds, mixed fruit and raisins, milk, a jug of orange juice, a bowl of fruit that had seem better days, teabags and coffee bags (!). I was wondering how one would get a cup of tea as there was no hot water anywhere to be seen when a man appeared- the first person to be seen since our arrival at 5 o'clock the previous day . I suspect it was the owner. I'm sure the management will have an excuse as to why he was bringing yoghurt , the hot water and a bowl of fruit dressed in his slippers and pyjama bottoms but whatever it is we felt it was a bit inappropriate. After all on the 'dos and don'ts' list guest were asked not to walk around in nightclothes . The man said hello asked us whether we had come to see the fireworks and off he disappeared. It was totally self-service. I don't know how it would work if there were lots of guests but it is shocking that you pay £100 a night out of season and you don't even get a pot of fresh tea or coffee at breakfast. It wouldn't have taken much - we were the only guest there !!!
I've noticed that the good reviews are by people getting married here I suspect that all services are contracted in ( I saw details on one of the reviews ) and have nothing to do with the barn owners themselves. There is no doubt that the venue is beautiful but after what we have experienced we would definitely not recommend this B&B/ hotel/ whatever they like to describe themselves as and If we were looking for a wedding venue the whole experience would have put us off this place. A shame because it could be a real treat but instead one is left with a 'rip off' feeling and wonder if this establishment was ever featured in ' No service please , we're british ' ! P.S the bed was comfortable .

We are very sorry that you did enjoy your stay and did not like the room.

As we have previously said, we are a very small company and do not have the staffing capacity to have a member of staff waiting around the clock, the check in system is explained on the bottom of the booking confirmation and we have found it to be rather successful, we are aware that the signage could be clearer and we are looking to get this improved.

The rooms have recently refurbished and unfortunately not everyone has the same taste, we think they are lovely and have had a lot of positive feedback on the rooms. I am sorry the heating was not turned on upon arrival; it is difficult to suite everyone with temperature so we generally let people set the radiator controls.

The reason why you happened to see the owner in his nightclothes is because unfortunately on that day the member of staff who usually does the breakfast had fallen ill and as it is his only day off he was a little unprepared, any other time he would have changed, he simply woke up with the news and thought it was important to get the breakfast out as soon as possible.

My apologies again for any negative feelings you had towards your stay, contrary to you belief the management do take the reviews seriously and as a result we are taking measures to improve our service.

Kind Regards

Julian Benton

“Disappointing”

We recently stayed here as a friend was holding there 40th ther. As far as the party went it was great but don't stay in the accommodation. It is extremely over priced for what it is. We paid £120 for the nigh for a family room. No bath to bath my young son in. The breakfast we expected full English at that price it was continental although not continental in my book. 2 choices of cereal, toast , yogurt and fruit that was mouldy I asked to replace and got an extremely frosty reply. A highchair was requested at breakfast and we were told none were available although we were given one the previous day for my son's supper. A complete let down. A real shame as it's a beautiful venue shame about the lack of attention and the lack of staff. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone nukes they seriously reduced there prices.

Dear Pippa

First of all I would like to apologies for the delay in responding to your review.

Thank you for the positive comments on the party and the venue I heard it was a brilliant night.

I am afraid that we have never offered a full English breakfast; as such we only advertise that there will be a continental breakfast available. The mouldy fruit, I can only apologise for and I have drawn the owner’s attention to this as more care needs to be taken when preparing the breakfast, we go shopping on a daily basis for the breakfast so I am afraid it may have just been missed.

The High Chairs are kept in the Barn usually as this is where the events are held, the Orangery currently does not have any high chairs as parents are usually happy to have the children on their lap but I will try and get this amended.

In regards to the staff, we do not try and pretend we are a hotel; we are a small short stay B&B that is very convenient when attending a function in the Barn so we do not have the same staffing as a larger establishment, therefore on some occasions it can be quite difficult to find a member of staff, again apologies for this.

I am sad to hear that you where disappointed and hopefully we can take your comments on bored to improve our service.

Kind Regards
Rebecca
