“Good value break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

The room was cosy and clean with a decent size bathroom. the breakfast was lovely. we ate in the Eagle and Child next door for ocnvenience as much as anything and it was very quiet which was a shame as the food was good and pretty good value. The Royalist was not a luxury break but for a reasonably priced break in a well located spot it was ideal.

“Royalist hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

I planned a nice weekend break away and had such high hopes for the hotel after looking at the pictures on the website, they are very misleading to say the least. By far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. After asking to change rooms my wife and I were given room number 2. On entering the room we were greeted with a damp patch on the floor, visible thick dust on the carpet along the skirting boards and under the dressing table. We were shown to the room by a member of staff who would have clearly seen the dust and damp patch however did nothing about it. The bed was very uncomfortable we did not even risk eating in the restaurant. Excellent area such a shame about the hotel. I would not recommend the hotel to any one.

“Character hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews of this hotel, however I was pleasantly surprised! We had a fantastic room (room 9), it was well decorated and full of character. The bathroom was nice too, clean and modern. The floor sloped and creaked and the corridors were narrow but that's part of the charm of this building being over 1000 years old!!
Breakfast was good and the staff were polite. It did seem very quiet but we were the on a week night. There is a car park which only fits a small number of cars however there is a free car park in the town so it wouldn't matter if there was no space. The hotel is really well located and Stow offers a good selection of places to eat (the hotel restaurant wasn't open on the Monday and Tuesday nights we were there, but the pub was). I would recommend this hotel and am surprised it wasn't busier!

“Very accomodating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Staff were very accomodating of me and my very pregnant wife.. we asked for 6 extra pillows and despite being full they made a plan and sorted it
The place is incredibly old and there are a few compromises, but the bed was a great big 4 poster (it was a tad narrow and was probably a standard double) but the room was nic ely furnished and the place clean and tidy

The restaurant was quite good.. not quite the fantastic it was supposed to be, but still very good
Its a lovely little town and a lovely little hotel
If i were to go back to stow on the wold i would stay there again

“Great staff, average hotel, poor restaurant...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

My wife booked direct with the hotel and paid £330 for 2 nights DBB in "Derby" Room 5. The room is in the roof, and is therefore quite small with sloping walls, and the small en-suite bath/tap/shower thing was a real struggle for me at 6'3''... but that’s a compromise I was prepared to make to stay in the oldest Inn in England. Despite the small size the room was surprisingly bright, immaculately clean, and had all the olde world character I expected.

The hotel restaurant was recommended by friends who’d stayed for a Valentines break in February, which is why we booked dinner, but the quality and preparation of food was a real disappointment. The restaurant was empty apart from a couple of other other hotel guests, while similarly priced establishments around town were very busy… that alone speaks volumes about its reputation locally. The poor quality continued with the tiny cooked breakfast which was presented on a cold plate, swimming in a pool of water from the poached egg. The black pudding deserves a special mention as I’m a huge fan of good locally sourced products, and the supermarket affair produced at breakfast was most disappointing of all… luke warm and rubbery. Buffet items were as expected and satisfactory.

Staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, the only issue being that front of house seemed to be running a skeleton crew. There was rarely a receptionist around when I was looking for one, and one poor chap seemed to be running the whole show (reception & restaurant) on our second night.

Location of hotel is perfect, slap bang in middle of town, the only compromise being that car parking is limited. There’s lots of parking off the main street on adjacent Well Lane when hotel car is park full.

I definitely recommend Stow as a base for exploring the Cotswolds, and the local tourist information office was most helpful I've ever encountered, planning our whole 2 day itinerary for us :)

Overall it's not a bad hotel, but I've given it a low rating because it represents poor value for money, and the restaurant came no where near to meeting my expectations.
