“First visit to Painswick”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We have stayed in many areas of the Cotswolds, usually in cottages, but this was a gift via Freshweekends.com and we chose to stay in Painswick at the Cardynham House hotel. We were given a Grade 2 room - the Palm Beach - which was lovely, light and airy with a great (and comfortable) four poster bed - not kingsize but cosy nevertheless. With a front door key we were able to come and go as we pleased. We had a small lunch at the next door pub (Royal Oak) and dined at The Falcon Inn (the only nearby place that served a Sunday evening meal). Both meals were excellent! Breakfast at the Cardynham was very good and set us up for the day. Overall, a good experience and would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: We only saw the Palm Beach and Medieval Room - Palm Beach has a shower and the other has a bath and...

“Buyagift customers be warned”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Tried to book a 2 night break at this Guest House for the end of April after finding they had availability. Was told I should have told them I was a Buyagift voucher holder and was then refused the booking with the consolation I could try 8 days before my intended trip. Why has this Guest House signed up with Buyagift when they are only going to accept a minority of applicants? Very disappointed.

“A Unique place to stay..loved it”

Just back from a two night at this great hotel (bandB).

The proprietor John was most welcoming and had thought of everything to ensure guests had a great stay. Excellent breakfast, which you order the night before, cooked to perfection.

Unfortunately the bistro was not open for evening meals as the staff were on holiday, but we had an excellent meal and time in the pub next door and a superb lunch and dinner at the Falcon.

For somewhere different and four poster lovers this is the place.

“BUYAGIFT VOUCHERS NOT WELCOME”

Tried to book a two night break for February,2012. All ok until I mentioned I had a Buyagift voucher. Their attitude changed. I felt that I was spoken to like a second class citizen. They made excuses not to accept the voucher, one reason being that a booking cannot be accetped more than eight days in advance of booking. This condition was not stipulated as a hotel restriction when I tried to book. Very disappointed.

This review has no place here at all as the reviewer did not stay with us..

The reviewer claims in the review to have stayed with us in January but this simply was not the case and is not truthful. The BUYAGIFT voucher is a promotional voucher offer 2 nights for 1 valid until April and our listing on the BUYAGIFT website clearly showed excluded dates - all Saturdays, Valentines, Bank Holidays etc. Despite this many callers fail to read these restrictions. Our contract with BUYAGIFT clearly allows us to limit availability at any time in the contract period and the most obvious ones are listed earlier. We allocated a limited number of rooms to this promotion by month, a larger number in January and February and a smaller number in March and April. as the revenue we receive barely covers our direct costs, though of course we do hope that guests will use our restaurant. We were staggered when we started to receive what has turned out to be hundreds of calls at all times of day and night including six calls on Christmas Day about this specific voucher. Our initial allocations for March and April were quickly used up and once that happened we started to suggest that guests may wish to call about 8 days ahead of the dates they were interested in as we may be able to let a further room at short notice. After reading this review I really regret doing that and should simply have said that we could accept no more bookings using this particular voucher.

I cannot be certain about this specific enquiry though I think it related to Valentines week which is also half term and for this week we had no availability as it is usually very busy.

The terms of this voucher require a guest to let it be known that they plan to book using the voucher before asking about availability. This client by their own admission did not do that. Our rooms are priced at a number of rates and not all of these can be covered by redeeming this particular this voucher, had the client made it clear at the begining then the process that the voucher was involved then all would have been smoother and my suggestion to call 8 days ahead on the chance that we could let a room that week is now regretted with the guest response.

In the end we have accepted a very large number of bookings using this particular voucher and have already had a good number of guests visit us using these in December and to date in January.

“Cool bed!”

We liked the bed and the fantastic old building. Very warm and friendly. Couldn't finish the monster omelette for breakfast (her) and was a bit underwhelmed by the very average English breakfast (him). Good for four-poster bed aficionados.

Room Tip: Next time, the room with a pool...
