“I cannot understand the 4star rating by Visit Britain”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

Riverside House is described in their brochure as 'superb bed and breakfast for both private and corporate guests' . I would disagree. My description would be that it is a dated building at the end of a small road in an unattractive area of Cirencester which provides adequate accommodation for trainees on courses or conferences, and canteen facilities for them and the staff of the Mitsubishi headquarters on the same site (during the week only).

The room was small and the en-suite basic. The carpet was stained, the windows dripping with condensation which had dried to a black mess around the frames. When my husband moved the trouser press to use it, the dust on the carpet behind it was disgusting and had obviously not been cleaned in a long time. This led to us examining the cleanliness of the rest of the accommodation and it was dusty in all the harder to reach areas. When we complained to the manager he did inspect the room when we were out, and I think an attempt was made to clean it again, and the broken lampshade by the bed was replaced making it marginally better. He also left us a bottle of wine and an apology.

On the plus side, the room was warm, and the beds clean.

The main road opposite the room was noisy but it naturally became quieter at night but we also heard the huge distribution lorries making their way in and out of the secure car park at all hours. These lorries also park in the car park and carry on their business as usual. I think the drivers use the cafeteria and maybe stay overnight if they need to.

A big extractor fan on the wall below one of the rooms caused smells and noise.

The only welcome we received was from the very friendly and efficient security guard on the car park gate (who was a mine of local information). We walked into the empty and dark, closed cafeteria/canteen and saw no one else about, as we arrived on a Sunday afternoon. We were aware it would not be open but it 'set the scene' and did not impress.

The breakfast next morning was adequate but certainly did not offer the huge choice now common to other accommodation. Mary gave cheerful hospitality and did what she could for us including instructing us on how to make our own coffee in the machine! The bar was small and provided the basics only.

We did leave our car in the car park for the two nights and days we were there , safe in the knowledge that the security was good. There were not many other guests. The walk into town is about 15 minutes.

When we asked if our daughter could come into the cafeteria for her breakfast with us, there was no problem at all, but the cost seemed high compared to the quality given.

We booked this accommodation at the last minute, and paid £120 for the two nights bed and breakfast. Accommodation in Cirencester is generally expensive, and this seemed a more reasonable price to pay, but the rooms should still be clean. The paintwork in the corridors is badly chipped and scraped and the whole place needs a jolly good makeover!

“Unusual entry, but a great find”

We have just returned from a short break in Cirencester Where we stayed at Riverside House. You enter through the security gates of a Mitsubishi Car company ,but don't let this put you off. This provides 24hr security parking which is free.We parked the car and didn't use it again until we went home.Walk out of the gates turn right and follow the road straight into the town centre a walk of about 15 mins .
The hotel itself is accessed over a small bridge from the car park , our room was clean and very comfortable >The breakfast was lovely , self service but a great selection Fresh fruit. cereals yoghurt and a full cooked english breakfast. The staff we met were all friendly and helpful .We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel .

“Weekend Booking? Be warned!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2008

My girlfriend and I booked this 'hotel' through a third party for a weekend stay in the Cotswolds and were very surprised to find that it is actually a Training and Conference Facility! There were prices listed in the rooms that were much less than we had paid so on the first night we realised that we were paying £22 extra per night than the rack rates displayed in the rooms which was pretty upsetting. We found the room and bathroom was average although I certainly wouldn't say 4 star.

There is no breakfast on the weekend, nor is there any room servicing so we had to wash our own coffee cups in the sink and the coffee sachets we used weren't replaced, the bed wasn't made and there was no reception - the lovely Mitsubishi security guards who worked 24 hours let us in each night. There is a staff canteen which was just food railings and padlocked fridges - no restaurant, bar or social area - when we were there it was empty with no lights or anyone else around.

We were really disappointed and will be we trying to claim back the extra money we paid from the third party and or the conference centre. It was unfortunate that we booked there as it was expensive and ultimately so disappointing as it was nothing like we expected.

  • Liked — The security guards were lovely to us
  • Disliked — The fact that it wasn't a hotel and the price

I have stayed in many hotels in the area on business and found this hotel very good value at £47.50 per night Bed and Breakfast. The room was very well decorated and comfortable. Breakfast was buffet style, good quality and staff very friendly. I will be staying again when in the area
