We booked this room as we were attending a wedding just down the road. The only option left when we booked about 2 months ahead was a family room at £45, so this is what we had.
When we arrived at 1.45, we were running late, so just needed to check in, then book a cab and head straight back out again. There was no one on reception, so we pressed the phone buzzer and waited....and waited...and waited. After 10 minutes had gone by, we had to resort to quickly getting ready in the entrance (luckily only a change of shoes and jackets etc)!
Finally, after 15 minutes, a woman popped her head round and asked if we had ordered an early check in. We hadn't, and this appeared to be the reason that no one was around, but surely there should be someone there to help out customers already at the hotel and people such as us anyway. Another woman eventually turned up, and although she was pleasant, informed us it would cost £10 to check in an hour early. (Check in is at 3pm)
We didn't need to use the room at this point, so just asked if we could leave our bags and order a cab. The answer was no, so we had to find a local cab company ourselves and lock our bags back in the car. Not a very helpful or warm welcome at all.
When we returned at 1am the guy at the desk was fine, and checked us in without much fuss.
The rooms were pretty basic, and although I don't expect anything fancy in a travelodge, it really was pretty cheap and nasty. The bed was ok, but only 3 pillows which isn't ideal. The tv was very old and cheap, and all in all it felt like staying in a dorm room rather than a hotel. It was at least clean though.
I wouldn't say this was appalling, but it was a pretty poor standard, and I doubt I'd book again. This experience was shared by the other couples whom we travelled with too.
Incidentally, the Little Chef across the road was surprisingly good - more than can be said for the travelodge Cirencester!
