I've done a great deal of business travelling in the past, and have lived in and out of hotels.. They all have the same carpet, same bathroom, trouser press, folding suitcase rack, same standard lamp, plastic flowers. Etc. Etc etc.
When we were looking for accommodation in Cheltenham, we were driven to B+B's simply because all the decent hotels were booked up, at least the central ones were. I've never been one for B+B's either.. They seem to all be either twee, grubby, or have a 1943 green and brown look to them. Their food is usually a disappointment too.. And excercise in happy shopper.
I'm very happy to say that The Abbey has changed my view of this entirely, and has taken the best of hotels and B+B's and created something just right.
The room.
We had the last room available, and they explained to us that it was large and airy, but had
no view. When we arrived we found that actually our room was in the basement, and the window faced the street. Having said that, the window was large and let a great amount of light in. The room was very clean, airy, and had a new and pale/neutral decoration scheme. No wood chip wallpaper here! The bathroom had no window, but was light, again recently decorated, and was a pleasant experience.
Other reviews complained about the shower being small and underpowered, and I'd say that the shower is standard sized for the uk (small by US standards) there was lots of very hot water from the shower. For some reason the toilet radiator seemed to be on full heat the whole time, which made the toilet like a sauna.
The staff
The staff were pleasant enough, the lady serving breakfast is a character too, and I regard
this is a positive thing. Sophie is lovely and quite welcoming, and various requests we made of her were dealt with, no problem at all.
The food
We are talking about breakfast. You are offered the usual mini-boxed cereals, fruit juice, yoghurt etc. But after that things became surprising. The full-English was made with very nice quality ingredients, thick fresh bacon, a home-made sausage, fresh-laid egg, local mushrooms etc. This was a surprise, and thinking back is a good indication of what makes this B+B different for me. I took a croissant and it was warm, fresh and crispy! The jam is from a local cotswold farm, so is the honey. Small inexpensive things that make all the difference.
Other small things like decent quality loo paper, a warm breakfast plate, lots of power sockets in the room, full sky selection on the rooms flat screen tv, and a decent 'honesty bar' where you can help yourself to local beers, wines and soft drinks. The missus loved that.
I would say that the abbey has taken all the best things from a top quality hotel, and simply added the B+B homely feel that hotels all fail to provide. It's a mix that works for me, and judging by all the other positive comments seems to have hit the mark with lots of other people as well.
£80 is a lot to pay for one night in a B+B, no question, but I've paid double that to stay in a bland euro/US hotel. I'm surprised to say that I'm happy to pay £80 for a night at the Abbey, and will be recommending it to friends.
Room Tip: The basement rooms have no Internet at all.
