This hotel is not in a great location if you want things on your doorstep but the standard of the hotel and level of service makes up for this.

We drove so it was not an issue for us to get into the town centre. On the first night we took a taxi which was around £6-8. Parking is £8 a day and you can come and go as you please.

The room was a good size with plenty of storage space. Coffee and tea making facilities. The small fridge was a bonus.

The gym was well equipped with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. There are also tennis courts available.

The breakfast was excellent with a large selection of hot and cold food, which was replenished regularly.

When we first checked in there was a bit of a queue and the girl could not find our booking (she was spelling my name incorrectly), but once that was resolved everything else went smoothly.

I got this 2 night break on a deal but would not hesitate to pay full price. I would definately come again when the weather is warmer.

We last visited this hotel in Sept 2009 I rated this 4* unfortunately this recent visit did not live up to the same standard. We again booked a dinner (with wine) bed and breakfast deal which was good value for money.

The room we stayed in this time was comfortable but could is looking a little tired and old. Shortly after reaching our room there was a knock on the door from two other guests who had been allocated the same room! Didn't particularly bother me though to be honest.

The breakfast was as good as I remember, its still a hot and cold buffet and for once they keep the hot food hot whereas virtually all the other hotel's its lukewarm.

The dinner was a little disappointing, the game pate starter was lovely as was my wife's risotto. When my duck and chorizo main came it was very over salted and the red wine sauce was burnt. They did replace this and it was much better the 2nd time around.

My wife's dessert of bread and butter pudding was lovely but my Banoffee Eton mess was not what it said on the tin. It was basically cream toffee sauce and banana, very little (if any meringue) and it would be best described as a trifle (one lacking any great flavour).

The service was good and the staff were polite and efficient and maybe it was just bad food choice but after our great experience last time. I was a little disappointed and would rate this as a 3 -3.5* (if it would let me!).

I had a booking for a nights stay at the thistle Cheltenham, only to get there to be told that they were over booked and that i would have to stay at another hotel, I was a little disappointed at first. but the way that the gent on reception handled it was brilliant! if I’m correct his name was Joe. he took the time to explain what happened and also tried to call me on my way down (my own fault for having the phone on silent). he arranged new travel for me and found me a place to stay for the night, I was even offered a cup of tea whilst i waited for a taxi.. I have stayed in many hotels across the country and even though i haven’t had to moved to a different hotel, I haven’t been looked after so well! I will happily return to the thistle as i have a feeling that the rest of the staff there will be as friendly and with a "can do" attitude as Joe.
