“Away from it all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

What a fabulous country inn - and only one hour from London.
We wanted to visit Constable country and the Sun Inn was the perfect spot. A half hour's walk takes you to Flatford Mill and the sites of many of Constable's paintings. Dedham itself is a very pretty village and served us well as a base to explore the surrounding country.
The Sun Inn - what can I say? As a pub it has a great choice of real ales - all well kept - and fine wines. It has a roaring fire. It has a lounge / games room with a good supply books and board games. The food is excellent - a good variety on the menu and all locally sourced. Breakfast was also very good - I can still taste the tomatoes! The room we had was large, warm and spotless. The staff were all extremely helpful. One of the rooms even has a ghost.
We had a great stay.

“Lovely Pub & Great Hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

My husband and I have just returned from a two night break which was part of their Autumn offer. Our stay included two nights accommodations, afternoon tea, 3 course dinner, 5 course taster menu with matching wine and breakfast - all for a very reasonable price of £350. We were not disappointed. The staff, all of whom are quite young, were extremely professional, helpful and very organised. We felt relaxed and well looked after whilst not being constantly bothered by staff. Our 5 course taster menu was wonderful. Each course was well cooked, with a wonderful matching wine which was so nice as we would not normally try lots of different wines with one meal. Our room was situated opposite Dedham Church and the chimes from the bells were a wonderful addition to our stay in the beautiful village of Dedham. We went for two lovely walks, both of which set us up for our evenings meal whilst allowing us to take in the breathtaking sights of Flatford Mills and Stoke by Nayland. I would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break away from the hum drum of the city.

“Highly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Had a superb stay here during an unseasonably warm March weekend. Lovely room, professional staff, fanastic dinner and breakfast. It is a great inn and a great location. If you like pubs, great food and beautiful walks in the country, I'd be very surprised if you were disappointed!

“Fab food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

We only went for lunch but it was lovely.
Without trip advisor and Alastair Sawday we would have totally passed this by it looks a bit scruffy both inside and out and there is no way without reading reviews that we would have stopped here.
The food was fantastic and the place had a really nice feel about it.However it did feel a bit chaotic ie my husband ordered from the menu and his first choice was sold out so they offered an alternative which sounded lovely but that also was unavailable etc etc.The seat covering was split the garden looked a bit unkempt etc. However if I was in the area and wanted lunch this would be where I went

“A refreshing change to my usual chain hotels”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

I booked the Sun Inn at Dedham instead of my usual Travel Inn at Ipswich. I arrived late on a cold autumn Sunday evening. I was warmly welcomed at the bar and expained I was later than expected as my journey had been difficult. I noticed that last orders for dinner was 9.30pm and I was 5 minutes past this time, 9.35pm!!
I asked, with some trepidation, if there was any chance of food. Knowing I was late I would not have been suprised, or offended, if the answer was "no". Instead the bar man cheerifully said no problem if I ordered quickly. What a refreshing change from some national chains that I frequently stay in. After a quick freshen up I came down to the bar and was offerered a tasting of any of the draught ales, thats a nice touch. A super pint of local ale was consumed at a good pace (well deserved after a very tedious journey!) I was shortly presented with an excellent selection of warm breads and was offered a variety of wine by the glass. My risotto arrived, very fresh and clearly prepared with care. My room, "Constable" was very comfortable, linen sheets, flat screen TV, and a super bathroom. It was also very, very clean. Little touches such as water, tea and coffee and a selection of magazines made me feel very at home. Following a very comfortable nights sleep I made my way to breakfast. An excellent choice of meats, cheeses and freshly baked breads was given up in favour of fried local free range eggs and rashers of organic bacon. Even the fruit juice appeared freshly pressed. All in all a great stay and when I was presented with the bill it was £40 cheaper than my usual travel Inn bed breakfast/evening meal. The nice thing about this place is that the staff are genuinely interested in making your stay enjoyable.
All in all a very enjoyable stay, next time I will ensure I arrive early enough to savour a full dinner!!!
