“In love with the pod bed, (room 31)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

We stayed in this hotel between Christmas & new year and thought it was lovely. We stayed in room 31 and my 4 year old was delighted with the pod bed, he's already asked when we're going back! The food was good, including the childrens menu and the staff were friendly and accommodating with the children.

Room Tip: 31 is excellent for families

Glad you had a fab time. The pod beds are rather fun and have been known to have been used by grownups as a den for watching boxsets...

“Service Problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

If you read back a few reviews on here there is a consistent theme of bad service and having stayed over Christmas I'm not surprised. I don't moan about service unnecessarily, I once read a review where a woman complained about not having tongs to pick up her croissant in the Four Seasons in Mauritius! I don't condone that sort of moan but when you have to wait for two hours before getting your main course on Christmas day, you can't help feeling they had bitten off more than they could chew. Service was consistently irregular, slow, orders confused not of a standard matching the price. We were offered a complimentary bottle of wine but that doesn't compensate you for having to wait for as long as we did on Christmas day. In addition our otherwise well furnished room was supposed to have a king sized v spring mattress, it was two matresess shoved together. This is a generally good hotel but given the price relative to the service the overall feeling is you have been sold a bit short.

Thank you for your feedback and positive comments. We apologise for the service delay for your Christmas day lunch. We've had a lot of wonderful and really positive feedback from the guests over Christmas; but clearly on this occasion we have not lived up to these standards for your table and apologise.

Room 46 is one of our new bedrooms does have a ViSpring Mattress; this can be used as a twin bed or as a double, but is zip and link so would not be pushed togethe - we will look into whether there is problem with this mattress in particular.

“Great Christmas break...just one flaw - the mattresses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

We stayed at The George maybe 20 years ago and, based on pleasant memories, decided to return for a Christmas break with our teenage children and parents.

What a fabulous transformation! The George has had a superb overhaul by the current owners who have managed to preserve the hotel's original 16c charm while injecting a wonderfully stylish and contemporary feeling.

All our rooms were beautifully decorated and furnished and our bathroom in particular was huge boasting a lovely shower and clawfoot bathtub.

The only moan from all our party was the useless mattresses in our rooms - called 'Vi-Spring Classic' - all of which dipped in the middle and provided no lumbar support so gave us all (young and old in 4 separate beds) backache. Note to management - buy the same mattresses as they have in the Radisson Edwardian Hotel Guildford - just superb.

From the time we arrived to departure the level of service was exemplary - overseen by an unobtrusive but eagle eyed manager - with just the right level of attentiveness.

The ambience of the hotel is serene, relaxed, charming and atmospheric - the perfect combination for a Christmas or romantic break.

Food was very good on Christmas Eve but dipped in quality on Christmas Day - only to be expected I suppose when trying to cater for 100+ people in a single sitting.

In summary a hugely enjoyable and relaxing Christmas break in a lovely hotel that is a credit to the owners and management. Just buy some new mattresses!!

“A fantastic place for a romantic break.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

I stayed here last weekend. We stayed in room 1 and the double roll top bath was my favourite part of the room! It had a place for my book and champagne glass so I was in heaven in my bubble bath! The room was very cosy and decorated tastefully.
We ate in the restaurant and apart from the fact we really wanted the lobster but they had sold out it was a delicious meal. We had the antipasti starter with lovely bread and followed that with the sardines and steak, both were cooked to perfection. The waiters were very attentive.breakfast was also delicious, there was a wide choice and the homemade yoghurt and granola was to die for!! I can't wait to go back!!

We are very pleased to hear you made the most of the bath! - Those book and wine-glass racks are rather good fun. Sorry you didn't get your lobster, hopefully we'll have plenty next time. Look forward to having you at The George in Rye again.

What a lovely break away. Friendly, helpful staff, spotless room, comfortable bed and delicious food. We will definitely be returning! If you visit - request room 44 with the double bath in your bedroom!

Thanks for the writeup. We do indeed have a few double baths which we like to think are equally good for one person to wallow in with mammoth extra space!
