“Let down by cleanliness of room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012 via mobile

We stayed there for one night as we were visiting brighton for my brothers 50th birthday bash. Staff were very friendly and things like breakfast times were made very clear.

We booked here because it was in the edge of town and had private free parking. Having lived in Brighton for many years I know that parking in-town can be a pain and also that taxis are plentyful!

The room was adequate for a double and ok for £65 (Brighton being fairly expensive as a rule). Unfortunately our room was above the kitchen so there was some noise from blow.

The main thing that let this stay down was that the room was fairly grubby, the lampshade next to my bed for example was absolutely filthy.

The shower was good but you could tell that there had been mold problems in the past. The towels werent the newest either.

Overall it wouldnt take much to make this a better place to stay but sadly on our stay it was lacking.

“Pretty good for what it is”

We have been going to The Black Lion for many years and they generally provide a tasty good value meal - either a steak, burger or chicken with chips or baked potato and free, help yourself salad. There are no great surprises here, either good or bad!
The restaurant is often full -waiting in the bar! - which I guess is a sign of lots of happy customers.
Service is ok - can be a bit slow, but I think they are working to capacity.
For variety and excitement go into Brighton, but for a nice meal the Black Lion hits the spot.

“enjoyable weekend in Brighton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We arrived on Friday 25th November to stay until the Monday. We got there around midday and were booked in straight away . We were given Room 203, which was very large with the lovely bay window. The room did over look the A23 and the traffice did quiten down at night.
There were two electric wall heaters in the room which worked really well ( we had been in other Inkeeper's lodges and they took ages to warm the room) The shower I know was rather small but plenty of hot water, again other lodges water sometimes was lukewarm.
Hotel was quite at night and once again we both enjoyed eating in the restaurant. It was always best to get down early as it does get rather crowed at the weekends. All in all we both enjoyed our 3 for 2 weekend very much.

“GOOD FOOD BUT POOR SLEEP”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

We stayed here last weekend and took advantage of the buy two nights get Sunday free.We had stayed her on previous occasions when visiting our Son in Hove as it is handy has plenty of free parking space to leave the car and we get a bus right outside the front door into Brighton with our bus passes. You get a free continental breakfast with an adequate selection and the Harvester meals are really good value with a good selection of nicely cooked dishes and help yourself salad.
On the down side on previous visits we had rooms at the front of the building which were great but this time when we checked in we were told we were in the annex in room 103.The person who checked us in stated that the rooms were bigger in that end which was true but the only window was minute and too high to open which was just as well as we were right next to the main boilerhouse and the rubbish bins and all the mains water etc to the hotel. I had ear plugs in at night so could put up with the noise but my Husband had no sleep for two nights. In fact he decided that rather endure another bad night we would return home early foresaking the free Sunday night.
When he handed in the key to be fair he was offered an alternative room but our bags were in the car ready for the 300 miles journey home.We got home at midnight and slept like babies. So I would say if you are going to this hotel it is good value for money but make sure you don't get allocated room 103 if you want a good night's sleep and don't want to be shut inside without a proper window.

Room Tip: avoid room 103 at all costs if you want to sleep soundly

“Excellent value for money.”

Arrived Sunday afternoon. Restaurant very busy but still had a personal pleasant welcome from the Manager. We were given 203, a bright, spacious and well equipped room overlooking the front and the A23 but as the traffic virtually stops at night, noise was never a problem. Breakfast is continental style but there was more than enough selection available. Even the coffee was OK. Parking is always an issue in Brighton but not here. A large well lit car park is available and it is FREE. We had couple of minor issues with the room. They were mentioned to the housekeeper at breakfast and by our return that evening all had been sorted. Brilliant. We have stayed here before and will do so again.
