We enjoyed our stay at The Amblecliffe, a small, affordable, typically English hotel in Brighton. Somehow this is exactly the kind of hotel you want to stay at when visiting Brighton. The Amblecliffe is not brand new or a luxury hotel. I'd describe it as comfortable, relaxed, and a place with character. Like a B&B.
We had a larger room in the front. Nice bathroom and good shower. Soft bed. All you needed to make coffee and tea in the room. Free cookies and candies.
They served a generous, delicious breakfast (but they don't lay out an extensive spread on buffet like you might see in a larger hotel).
We didn't hear anyone at all (surprising in an older house like this), although one morning we heard creaking floorboards from the people upstairs.
It's located in a charming residential area on the east side of the town centre of Brighton. There were a number of these large-houses-turned-into-hotels on this street.
The location was right for us. Plenty of restaurants, pubs and shops nearby. It's walking distance from everything in Brighton for those willing to walk a bit. For those who aren't, the bus stop is nearby. The hotel is about 200 metres from the beach (and a very modern and affordable gym called, er, "the gym").
We enjoyed meeting and talking to Elaine -- hotelier / legal exec / paraglider / free spirit extraordinaire. She was a vibrant, accommodating hostess and she knows how to run a hotel.
I guess this place is around 2 or 3 stars, but I'm going to add one because we enjoyed it so much. We left it with a smile on our faces and the feeling of having had a great weekend.
