“Good little find...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

I have just returned from a two night stay at gerrards in the 'Zen' room and i must say for what we paid (£110 for two nights) then its excellent value.

Pro's :

AMAZING location. Right next to St James street and the pier and few minutes walk into town.
The price.
Themed rooms - Quirky and very different.
The bed - Very comfortable.

Con's

The pillows were pretty bad and paper thin. Considering the bed was so comfortable then this was a bit of a let down.
Extra's - Breakfast extra at £7.50 per person per day for full english seems a bit steep, even for Brighton.
Parking at £10 per day outside. Expensive even for Brighton.

Overall, a good little hotel which if you get it for the price i did is an excellent find. Would definately go back again - Will just ask for more pillows next time...

“Great hotel. Very central, made to feel very welcome and really enjoyed the themed rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

I've just been to this hotel with 5 girl friends. We were made to feel very welcome and I loved the theme rooms. Each one was different and there had been so much attention to detail. The hotel was clean, beds were comfortable and the service was excellent. We had a lovely breakfast with free range bacon and delicious sausages. All round an excellent hotel and I would definitely go back.

“HAHA THEMED ROOMS WERE BRILL, LOVED THIS PLACE!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2010

Adored this place, much better than some fuddy duddy B&B, this hotel had a bit of PHZZZZZAZ about it!

THEMED ROOM - We stayed in the island room, and were given a discounted rate as the bathroom was being re-decorated. Only bad thing about this room was it was right at the top of three flights of stairs but you get used to it. Very large and charming room, by no means the best though. We went for a sneaky look in the others, if you do get to request go for the JUNGLE room, comes with a huge decorated bathroom as well, whilst we only had a small wetroom.

STAFF - Staff were LOVELY! We only stayed the one night but they would chat and have a laugh with you. Very informative when we checked in.

FOOD - Ah now unfortuntely we missed breakfast due to being a bit hungover in the morning, but we assume it would have been nice for £5 lol. The hotel room did supply tea and kettle etc which was nice for the morning to have a cuppa and look out on the nice view.

LOCATION - Now even though we didn't have breakfast in the hotel, it's about a 200 yard walk away from the centre of everything and we found a greasy spoon pretty easy. We walked to the wedding in the Town Hall and the hotel was close enough to do that and we got to see loads of interesting stuff on the way which i can't wait to go back and look at!

SECURITY - You're given a pass/key so you can come in at any time of the night (5am :$) and basically we were polite enough not to wake anyone up. Because it is such an old building the floors and space between mean you really can't hear any other guests. Not that we did, but the staff do explain, if you do unfortunatley loose your front door pass/key, there's a hotline number visible in the front window to call so they let you in, obv i think there is a charge if you do lose your key so don't!

PARKING - We were lucky enough to park right in front of the strip of pay parking in front of the hotel. We we warned it would be £20 or something but it was more like £10 for the whole day which was pretty reasonable. I think if you put in extra it will cover you over to the next morning but we somehow messed this up so had to wake at 9am to put more moeny in.... AND my watch stopped!!! Thankfully we had not been clamped but do not take chances, we were lucky. Beach is about a 200m walk away from the parking hotel as well, so very easy if you're going on a beach hol with towels , windbreakers etc.

PRICE - We paid £80 for one night to be right in the centre of things in a perfect room with friendly and accomodating staff. The local travel lodge was about the same price so we definately found a hidden gem. This place gets booked up for a reason, it really is fantastic, we're planning to go back next year to explore Brighton properly.

All in all, what a lovely, locally run boutique hotel!

“Fun for a one night stay, excellent breakfast!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

We stayed in the Oriental Room which is at the top front of the hotel, it has a sea view and looks over the squares garden and is individual and quirky. Good points are staff very welcoming, quite clean, breakfast excellent, central location. Bad points are room a little worn and a bit overpriced if honest, very noisy early in the morning, was little concern about the nearest fire escape being out of operation. Overall l rate this as very good although because it is a very different experience to the norm it is hard to rate. l would not call this hotel a Boutique hotel, Drakes its not, more of a quirky B &B, l would recommend it if you are willing to enter into the fun spirit of it but its not for the serious among you.

“Fun though a little tacky and confusing.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We stayed in the Kasbah room which was nice but could be much better. The mattress needs replacing on the bed as it was terrible, there is no curtain for the shower meaning baths are the only option, and the door to the room is way too thin (which is weird as the room is right next to reception). Bathroom was nice and the small lounge area with the leather sofas was great.

The only issue we encountered was that when the people in the room above us emptied their bath, it started to rain into our bathroom. We figured this may happen as there was obvious water damage all over the roof in there. When I told the guy at reception upon checkout he feigned concern though it was clear he knew this happens a lot.

Could be a great little hotel if they sorted out the issues.
