“A Great Find”

We booked this B&B from the internet as there were no other big hotels with availability as we went over the bonfire weekend and we were very happy with our choice.

Everything was great, from the location to the breakfast in bed with bucks fizz to kick start weekend mornings.

We would definately stay here again, it was nicer than a large chain hotel as there was more of the personal touch.

“Don't judge a book by its cover.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

My heart sank when I saw the outside. The sea air has taken toll of the paintwork and it needs tending to after this winter weather. It doesn't look fresh like the website picture anymore. It must have been fantastic when new. Outside 2 stars.

But the location was great, the welcome warm, the room excellent and the three breakfasts served in the room faultless. Excellent breakfast menu. The loo was quirky and there was a drain smell every so often. I do wonder whether they knew of the plumbing problems when they bought the building. Loved the bath bomb and toiletries.

Bathroom 3 stars. Bedroom 4 stars . Breakfast 5 stars.

Room Tip: A room at the rear may be quieter. It is central, so there is noise until the early hours.

“Room with the hot tub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

I read a lot of realy bad reviews after I booked this hotel and a few good ones so im going to try and give a fair review the hotel front looked a bit sad but it is a b&b so i got over it the inside is very nice and clean and they had a big selection of dvds and cds to use if you wanted and They where very welcoming.
The kitchen was really clean better then a lot of hotels by far at this point.
The room was travelodge size which is fine it was perfectly clean there was champagne waiting in the room and rose petels on the bed they had even made reservations at a amazing resturant for us and I found everything I needed in this guid book in the room very smart.
I booked the room with the hottub and no they cant see you, it was so well hidden and the hot tub was clean but thats when it got a bit sad some of the outside lights didnt work but that didnt kill the mood really but it needed some tlc like a repaint out side an new window ledges It looked like it would have been amazing a year ago but hadnt been kept on top of then we went to have showers well the water seemed to drain slowly so when my patner went in it stopped draining all together then started backing up after we soaked up some of the water i used the toilet and saw water comen up the base of the shower every time we flused it the same thing happened when you run the sink tap not nice.
When I went to check out i was told it happpens all the time its an old system but they would look into it errrrr.
There was also only one bed side table and thats normaly a standard in hotels with three stars up Im not sure how it got 4 stars id say 3stars as the breckfast is great but with the shower problems an cheap appliances id say 2 stars so because of the room even tho theres a hot tub the price was simply not worth it. Im sorry but it needs some tlc the pluming sorting then it be amazing.

We are very sorry about your plumbing problem - which we sorted out for you as soon as you told us about it. I think you misheard me; I didn't say it happens all the time, I said it's normal for the shower tray to drain away slowly because of the saniflo pumping system our plumbing is based on.
We are planning a refurbishment soon which will adress the issues you had with the courtyard window ledge and painting. But it's not really fair to criticise us because one light bulb had blown, or because of the lack of bedside table - you could see there was no space to put one at your side of the bed becasue of the wall being there. Every other bedspace at Nineteen has a bed side table, but it's not really why the AA award its stars (and on that subject remember we are Guest Accommodation, not a Hotel).
The room is priced in a way that reflects the very high running costs of the hot tub, the high cost of appliances and amenities, and the unique nature of having a private hot tub. You are also paying for the levels of service we try to provide, and to that end I'm glad you appreciated all the special things we did for you.

“What a shame”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

Stayed here for 3 nights in July. Booked here as to the location was just perfect for beach, bars and restaurants. As we arrived we were not impressed with the frontage and the street, looked quite rundown. Met by Arif who was a very nice chap so things were looking up.
The room. Quite small but that's ok and we knew that but it was enough. The shower though was a disgrace, one of those that when you've showered you feel more grubby after, soap stains on the shower door looked they have never been cleaned, may a suggest white vinegar? Can't comment on the "Molton Brown" products as a lot of people do as we refuse to use products that are cruely tested on animals. Did enjoy the breakfast that is brought to the room, very fresh fruit with yogurt honey and seeds, good coffee and breads. After 25 years of traveling I really can't see how how this is rated as a 4 star,if it is then my house must be a 10 star.In it's day this must have a been a lovely place but it's really needs updating. If I paid around £30 a night I would have been happier but the rate is equal to The Jury's Inn's rates and that is a 3 star and far superior. What a shame

Room Tip: Yes go to the Jury's Inn

We are sorry you weren't impressed. When comparing star ratings please remember that the Jury's Inn is a Hotel, and we are a Guest House. Unlike large hotels, small quality guest houses can't compete with very low room rates around £30 - our cost base is just too high.

“Pleasant B&B for a relaxing weekend away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

My boyfriend and I spent a 3-night weekend stay here which was relaxing and pleasant. Nineteen is in a great location, close to the beach and some good restaurants and pubs. We stayed in the "Den" which is one of the rooms at the top of the house, slightly smaller than the other double rooms according to the website but we didn't find it too small. Breakfast was lovely - no cooked breakfast but still filling and delicious - I can recommend the fruit salad with yoghurt, the croissants, pain au chocolat and the porridge. Good coffee and at the weekend you can also have a glass of champagne, Bucks Fizz or a Bloody Mary, which is a lovely touch and very pleasant way to start the day. Breakfast is served in your room at the time you request on your breakfast card. The shower is better than most I have encountered in hotels. The owners are friendly and welcoming. There isn't a beverage tray in the room; instead you are invited to use the kitchen in which there are loads of different types of tea and coffee, and biscuits; I really liked being able to make a large mug of coffee with real milk and a proper kitchen kettle, and the rooms at the top of the hotel are not as far away from the kitchen as other reviewers have implied. A large bottle of mineral water was put in the room every day. Earplugs are provided should you need them but the only noise I noticed was from the seagulls, which is only to be expected at the seaside! I would definitely recommend Nineteen for anyone looking for a relaxing short stay in Brighton.
